At CESO, a Crew Chief participates independently or with the assistance of a (Sr) Field Survey Technician to complete surveying services. Assists or directs survey crews in performance of land surveys, data collection and construction staking.
Primary Responsibilities
- Directs/assists daily duties of survey crew as required. Mentors junior staff members on survey field procedures, equipment, field notes, communications and CESO standard survey operating procedures according to the CESO survey manual.
- Operates survey equipment such as total stations, GPS equipment, data collectors, automatic levels, and scanners.
- Performs research of previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys including courthouse and utility information.
- Complete construction surveys for area roads, bridges, buildings, subdivisions, and other properties.
- Complete boundary and topographic surveys that establish rights-of-way on area roads and properties.
- Read maps, plans, and stake-out sheets to reproduce a physical survey.
- Keep survey notes and decide on survey techniques to be used on specific projects.
- Responsible for ensuring surveys are correct and accurate.
- Records data electronically and handwritten according to the CESO Land Surveying Manual.
- Proficient in use of data collector to perform field to finish operations.
- Understanding of basic coordinate geometry functions.
- Basic understanding of boundary resolution, procedures and processes.
- Basic knowledge of construction layout for utilities, roads bridges and buildings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of field survey related experience/training is required.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- OSHA 10 Hour Construction and/or Safe Land Certification preferred, or to be obtained upon hire.
- First Aid & CPR certification is preferred.
- NSPS CST Level 3 is preferred.
- Computer skills necessary to enter daily timesheet data and use Microsoft Outlook for email correspondence.
- Proficient in navigating Windows or Android operating systems is required.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Civil 3D is preferred.
- Working knowledge of TBC and Access is preferred.
- Local travel as assigned.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to varying work environments including extreme heat or cold, adverse weather conditions, uneven terrain, and moving construction vehicles while onsite. An employee may be exposed to poisonous and/or thorny vegetation, snakes and stinging insects.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a work environment that has a noise level that varies between moderate to loud.
- Ability to travel as needed, which may include occasional overnight stays. Must be available to work overtime as required. Must be able to access various project locations, including sites with limited ADA accommodations.
