Accounting Technician

DEPARTMENT OF Planning & Development

Finance Division

Number of Positions: 1

(additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $55,344

New hires are paid the starting rate. Current employees' pay rate is determined by their job title and years of service

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNITS 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, performs paraprofessional accounting and auditing duties; and performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Reviews program contracts, budgets, and budget amendments and revisions for conformance to federal, state, and local government accounting requirements

* Interprets contract provisions in order to identify allowable and non-allowable expenditures

* Audits vouchers, invoices, and completes payment transactions processing

* Checks and reviews audited vouchers to ensure accuracy and conformance to established accounting procedures

* Resolves problems regarding budget limitations, allocations, or modifications and prepares necessary documentation

* Provides technical assistance on the preparation of documents for reimbursement to department staff, contractors, subcontractors, or other agencies

* Maintains control ledgers, prepares routine financial reports, and approves vouchers for payment

* Uses computerized accounting systems to record and reconcile accounting records

* Prepares memos and updates transactions into spreadsheets

* Establish electronic files and scans transactions into the appropriate file

* Updates supervisor with information regarding transactions and related activities including workload and special projects

City Hall, 10th Floor

Days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 8:30am - 4:30pm

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications



  • Two years of paraprofessional accounting or auditing experience; OR
  • An Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Accounting; OR
  • An Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university INCLUDING at least 15 semester hours in Accounting


SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment and written exercise as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interviewprocess will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

* Previous accounts payable experience

* Proficiency working with Microsoft Word and Excel

* Proficiency working with Oracle-based accounting software

* Previous experience auditing invoices and/or vouchers

* Associates degree or higher in Business Administration or Public Administration

* Previous accounts reconciliation experience
