THE POSITION

Are you a high school student with more than a passing interest in Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or similar occupations? We have an exciting opportunity for you to secure a paid internship that offers hands-on experience with the real-world challenges of managing state forest operations in Susquehannock State Forest. This unique experience will enable you to contribute to the health and sustainability of Pennsylvania's forests, ensuring they remain vibrant and enjoyable for all.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In your position, you will frequently accompany a Forestry employee to observe and engage in tasks related to the management of Pennsylvania's state forest lands and associated areas. This role involves monitoring and assisting with maintenance and construction project oversight, as well as performing basic upkeep duties for state forests, trails, and outdoor spaces. You will acquire knowledge essential for demonstrating effective silviculture practices, which encompass the growth and cultivation of trees. Additionally, you will take part in various meetings and procedures aimed at preparing for new projects and ongoing maintenance, while also being expected to understand and apply common safety practices.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Work schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location
  • Senior enrolled in High School 2025-2026 - The internship could be for the 2025-2026 school year until 6/30/2026
  • Junior enrolled in High School 2025-2026 - The internship could be for the 2025-2026 school year, summer 2026, and 2026-2027 school year
  • Position located at Susquehannock State Forest, 3150 E. 2nd Street, Coudersport, PA 16915
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
  • You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2025 - 2026 school year.

Additional Requirements:
  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating that you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to the use of the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
