What We Need:
We are looking for an Industrial Design intern to join our Industrial Design team in Muscatine, IA, during Summer 2026!
What You Will Do:
HNI's summer internship program is a great opportunity for first-hand experience in your field of interest. You'll work on one or more projects that create value for our business partners. HNI's large, paid internship program includes exposure to leadership, professional development opportunities (Lunch and Learns, training, skill building workshops), support through a mentor relationship, volunteering, and social events!
Company-paid apartment-style housing may also be available, based on student's geographic need and current housing capacity. Depending on the flexibility of the role, the intern may have the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule.
The Industrial Design team facilitates and oversees the concept development and design of the product to optimize the function, value and appearance for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. As a member of this team, you will have the opportunity to develop numerous concepts and evaluate them for validity based on design research, competitive analysis, aesthetics, design-function relationships, ergonomics, durability, materials, application, budget, price, production cost, market trends, and customer requirements. Our interns are a key source of future talent for entry-level design careers.
What You Have:
  • Candidates should be working towards a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design. Junior level coursework is preferred.
  • Interest in commercial furniture design, space planning, sketching, and renderings
  • Experience with CAD Modeling (such as Rhino 3D, CREO, SolidWorks) preferred
  • Experience with rendering software (such as Keyshot) preferred
  • Portfolio containing examples of design work must be submitted
  • Preference will be given to applicants with relevant work experience, internships, or involvement in related activities such as tutoring or business fraternities
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
What You're Good At:
  • Self-starter with high personal motivation and desire to take initiative and ownership
  • Strong experience managing projects, preferably in an agile project management framework
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
