Position Summary:

The position coordinates, oversees and engages undergraduate students in promoting their academic, educational and professional development from orientation up through graduation. Evaluates students' progress in their respective program, counsels and provides guidance and direction regarding degree requirements, programs, academic and professional planning, course registration, selection and available resources and opportunities. Interprets University, Campus and College policies and procedures. Has the authority to make commitments on behalf of the University. Develops and presents academic information to orientation groups, potential students, and family members. Guides and supports students in their transition from high school and other colleges/universities to UIC.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring, and counseling) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance or counseling; communicates academic progress and findings to coaches (for NCAA compliance), financial aid and various administrators and professors. Advises student academically from orientation to graduation
Meets with students, by appointment, on a walk-in basis, via group advising, open advising and cohort advising sessions, to assess and advise students on academic and career issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; develops an action plan for the student to explore alternative careers and related majors.
Engages students to ensure successful completion of a degree. Serves as an ambassador to students to help deal with poor grades, changing majors/minors and provides support for students facing academic difficulties. Asks appropriate questions to determine how to best serve the student.
Evaluates official student records including degree checklist; documents all pertinent student information; updates computerized information system regarding changes to student status.
Interacts with Faculty members and Directors, especially the Directors of Undergraduate Studies, to gather and provide new information regarding curriculum, student academic difficulties and performance to present a unified message to students.
Advises students transferring from other academic institutions on transfer articulation and determines how courses taken at other institutions, including online courses, will transfer to UIC. Evaluates and verifies transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.
Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of new student orientation and presents academic information to interested students and family members during preview days and recruitment events. Serves as policy expert for the college.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or a related field.
  • Demonstrated work experience in student/academic advising, counseling or other related field preferably in an institution of higher learning.
