About This Role

The Senior Consultant in the Rail Practice will lead vehicle dynamics analysis, and field testing programs. The role combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, overseeing junior staff and managing high-profile consulting projects. In addition to technical contributions in simulation and dynamics, this position requires experience in business development, proposal preparation, and client relationship management. The Senior Consultant will supervise the other staff specializing in simulation and will integrate their work into broader accident investigations, performance analyses, and litigation support, in both transit and freight rail space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage large-scale consulting projects within the railroad practice, including simulation studies, dynamics analyses, and field-testing programs.
  • Oversee consultants working with simulation tools such as TOES (Train Operations and Energy Simulator), NUCARS, VAMPIRE, and related modeling platforms.
  • Direct and participate in instrumented vehicle testing and over-the-road field data collection to validate models and analyze real-world performance.
  • Provide technical oversight on multibody vehicle dynamics modeling, ride quality studies, derailment reconstructions, and train handling evaluations.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables while ensuring technical quality and client satisfaction.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, proposals, and client presentations for litigation support, operational consulting, and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop new business opportunities through proposal writing, presentations, and direct client engagement.
  • Mentor junior consultants and contribute to the growth and technical advancement of the Rail Practice.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in railroad engineering, vehicle dynamics, or transportation consulting.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing multidisciplinary engineering projects and teams.
  • Experience with simulation software (TOES, NUCARS, VAMPIRE, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with instrumented field testing, data acquisition, and over-the-road measurement campaigns.
  • Strong background in client interaction, business development, and proposal preparation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to present to clients, technical audiences, or in legal proceedings.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited University; Masters degree is preferred.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Working knowledge of simulation and analysis software such as TOES, NUCARS, VAMPIRE, MATLAB, or Python.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Pursuit of an EIT/PE license encouraged
