About This Role

The Senior Staff Consultant in the Railroad Practice will focus on train performance simulation and multibody vehicle dynamics modeling to support accident investigation, operations analysis, and energy efficiency studies. The role emphasizes hands on use of simulation software, technical analysis, and preparation of client facing deliverables.

The consultant will contribute directly to simulation projects using TOES (Train Operations and Energy Simulator) and multibody dynamics tools such as NUCARS or VAMPIRE. In addition, the consultant will assist in data analysis, report preparation, and presentation of results to clients and industry audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct train performance simulations using TOES to evaluate operational efficiency, fuel consumption, and schedule adherence.
  • Apply multibody vehicle dynamics models (NUCARS, VAMPIRE, or equivalent tools) to analyze vehicle-track interactions, ride quality, and derailment scenarios.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, exhibits, and presentations for clients, technical conferences, and litigation support.
  • Analyze operational and vehicle performance data to validate simulation models and provide recommendations.
  • Collaborate with team members across disciplines to integrate simulation results into broader engineering analyses.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of modeling methods, procedures, and best practices within the Railroad Practice Group
  • Assists in preparing and reviewing project proposals or plans to determine time frame, funding limitations, appropriate procedures to accomplish the project tasks, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of the project.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in rail engineering, transportation simulation, or mechanical/structural dynamics is required (internship or graduate research experience acceptable).
  • Familiarity with train performance simulation software is required, (TOES preferred).
  • Exposure to vehicle dynamics simulation tools (NUCARS, VAMPIRE, SIMPACK, or similar multibody packages).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited University is required
  • Master's degree in engineering is preferred.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Pursuit of an EIT/PE license encouraged
