Fire Protection Engineering Intern | Urbandale, IA

Join IMEG as a Fire Protection Engineering Intern in Urbandale, IA and ignite your career with real-world experience designing systems that safeguard lives and property. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll contribute to the design and analysis of sprinklers, clean agent suppression, fire pumps, standpipes, and integrated fire alarm systems for high-rises, data centers, schools, hospitals, and more. Using hydraulic and fire modeling software with BIM, you'll collaborate with experienced engineers to deliver innovative, code-compliant solutions-while gaining mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities to launch your future in fire protection engineering.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing discipline-specific systems per code and IMEG standards

  • Research commercially available equipment

  • Support client relations, maintain project design notebooks, and prepare permanent record documentation

  • Coordinate design and schedules with other disciplines and suppliers

  • Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while tracking progress

  • Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final checks

  • Prepare and issue addendum information

  • Conduct job site observations and perform services per contract requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

  • Strong interest in design consulting

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software

  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
