The candidate will be responsible for working with the Citrix Application Layering product. A primary responsibility is the enhancement, support & maintenance of the virtual desktop and published application environment at IT@JH. VDI Testing is critical for success of changes introduced into the VDI environment. Each month EDE releases Windows MyCloud and SAFE Desktop VDI Image Releases and performs testing of core applications, and any significant changes made since the last release.

Candidate will be responsible for maintaining various Windows Operating System VDI Images. Each OS release creates unique challenges and includes the formation of over 50 application layers per OS version. This requires the individual to generate automation scripts for most application installs for quality control. Documentation is required for building OS, platform, and application layers, publishing full images, assigning elastic layers and ELM maintenance, upgrades and support.

Duties in support and maintenance of the VDI images used in production pools include, but are not limited to the following items:

Microsoft Operating System Security Updates



  • Application updates using SCCM packages or Application Layering techniques
  • Monthly implementation of customer or application team updates as communicated by Cloud Client Access Team
  • Adherence to agreed-upon Recompose Calendar (includes monthly image updates)
  • Communication of any ECI Task Sequence support issues to the Cloud Client Access team
  • Creation and maintenance of all EMMS/EDE virtual desktop templates and images to be used
  • VDI operating system upgrade process testing
  • Communication of delays or other issues that may impact users of VDI systems
  • Capture of applications requested by VDI customers via Citrix App Layering
  • Catalog of Applications created via Citrix App Layering to include vendor version and
  • Provides 'customer front-end' to provide 'self-service capability' for application layer requests from customers (i.e., Service Now)
  • Creation and implementation of GPO's as prescribed by Cloud Client Access Team
  • Works with customers (CTS, Hopkins SAFESAFERCloud Client Operations) to determine their functional needs, translating customer needs into software requirements for existing or new hardware/software applications
  • Provides guidance on optimization of desktops for platform interoperability and acts as liaison between virtual and physical desktop technologies
  • Offers endpoint support on issues and trouble resolution tasks on virtual desktop related tasks
  • Creation of Active Directory Group Policies / Citrix Policies for VDI
  • Task Automation using PowerShell


General Position Summary: In accordance with institutional policies and standards, the Systems Engineer is responsible for administration, programming, maintenance, performance, implementation, security and support of various departmental and enterprise wide platforms, including the installation and testing of new software, operating systems, related utilities/services, and hardware products as well as the integration of new products and /or software release upgrades into the current environment. Conducts systems performance evaluations, monitoring, patch management and security evaluations. Analyzes user needs in various computer environments (including but not limited to mainframe, Windows, and mid-range) and makes recommendations for products and services that meet those needs. Ensures that all systems environments are maintained in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Projects often require interaction with various departments and teams both within and outside the department.

Job Scope/Complexity:Responsible for full life-cycle of medium to large sized complex projects; (complex and large projects typically are applications/systems with 501-3000 concurrent users requiring uptime commensurate with Clinical, Business critical, Education critical or Enterprise systems.) Project scope can span an entire department, division, or enterprise-wide level. For enterprise-wide level typical projects impact the broader customer base of Johns Hopkins and its most mission critical systems. Impacts of outages will cause major disruption such as implementation of downtime procedures, major disruption of business operations, and/or cascades to more than 7 systems/applications. Disruptions are without obvious or simple workarounds.

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field is required. Additional experience may be substituted for education.

Knowledge:
* Demonstrated knowledge of technology and complex business/clinical/education process.
* Intermediate knowledge of systems and data flow diagrams and other analysis artifacts.
* Strong understanding of testing and quality assurance processes with entry-level complexity.
* Intermediate knowledge of Windows and Unix/Linux environments.
* Intermediate knowledge in the assigned IT environments.

Skills:
* Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.
* Strong understanding of how to create technical documentation.
* Strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.
* Demonstrated ability to execute assigned tasks within established deadlines.

Work Experience: Four years of related experience with autonomous administration, programming, maintenance, performance, implementation, security and support of various departmental and enterprise wide multiple platforms; complex business, clinical, education, or infrastructure solutions

PROBLEM SOLVING:
* Solves software and hardware problems by using best practices for the environment to ensure system integrity.
* Completes server level administration problem solving in recoveries by following documented procedures to ensure a stable environment.
* Monitor changes and resolve problems requiring mid-level technical expertise by responding as they occur, reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Demonstrates intermediate knowledge of relevant computer systems, applications and interfaces.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a normal office/home environment where there are limited physical discomforts due to temperature, noise, dust etc. Work may also be completed from remote home environment. Work requires attention to detail and requires mental/visual acuity. Travel is required to JHM entities to attend meetings and conferences related to the individuals' accountability.
