Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

The Hospital Assistant II provides direct support to patients and providers in the Behavioral Health outpatient clinic. Working under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the nursing team, this role assists with patient care, clinical procedures, and administrative support to ensure positive patient outcomes and smooth clinic operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Perform routine clinical functions including vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and documentation of chief complaints.
  • Document interpreter use and coordinate with interpreting services for patient appointments.
  • Assist providers and patients in preparation for exams and procedures.
  • Act as a chaperone as needed for medical providers.
  • Support patient flow through the clinic and facilitate referrals as ordered.
  • Comply with all infection control, safety, and clinical practice standards.

Communication

  • Maintain professional and courteous communication with patients, providers, and staff.
  • Notify providers of delays and service issues; advocate for patients by helping ensure clinic schedules run smoothly.
  • Share observations and concerns with the care team and suggest improvements to clinic operations.
  • Assist patients with issues and complaints, applying conflict management skills.
  • Use the Electronic Health Record (APeX) within the scope of practice, including documenting vitals, chief complaints, medications, allergies, and test results.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms and manage medical supply inventory.
  • Coordinate breaks with team members to ensure clinic coverage.
  • Follow infection control procedures and cleaning/disinfecting protocols for equipment.

Other Duties

  • Provide administrative support, such as booking appointments, tests, surgeries, and authorizations.
  • Check in patients and perform additional clerical tasks as needed.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Knowledge and abilities necessary for successful performance of assigned duties.
