Metro Transit's Capital Programs is responsible for the construction and delivery of capital projects including Light Rail and Bus Rapid Transit. How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

Metro Transit's Capital Programs division is hiring an Office Engineer to assist in monitoring construction activities and confirming compliance with contract requirements. This is done by interfacing with project controls, following proper document management and workflow procedures/processes. This position will be hired as an Engineer or Associate Engineer, depending on qualifications.

We are creating a six (6) month eligibility list for current and future openings.

What you would do in this job

  • Manage the RFI, submittal, project closeout and other contract administration processes for the Council. Ensure that shop drawings and materials submissions are reviewed and are on schedule and comply with the contract documents.
  • Provide status reports for RFI's, submittals and other contract administrative processes to management, the Contractor and stakeholders
  • Assists with the review of the contractor's pay requests as assigned by the CAR's
  • Prepares construction contract closeout documentation satisfactory to finance and engineering. Maintains as-built plans and records during the project. Upon project completion, collects redlined plan sets and change orders, etc., and develops a comprehensive set of as-built plans.
  • Confirms completion of work and resolves actual concerns through site visits with Council, Contractor, and other local and state representatives.
  • Assists with quality control and quality assurance oversight on assigned projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Position will be filled as an Engineer or Associate Engineer, based on qualifications.

Engineer (Non-represented Grade G, Non-exempt - $76,690 - $124,467 annually)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in a related discipline
  • Two (2) years of related engineering experience
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.
Associate Engineer (Non-Represented Grade F, Non-exempt - $74,131 - $120,307 annually)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in a related discipline
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire. Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.
License Requirement: Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of engineering principals in areas of functional responsibility
  • Knowledge of construction management principles in areas of functional responsibility
  • Experience working on an active construction site
  • Exceptional communication abilities
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for planning projects including the use of project scheduling software. and project management software
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Word and Excel, email and various database project tracking software packages. Computer applications related to the work including basic GIS and AutoCad concepts and applications preferred
  • Ability to apply diverse knowledge of engineering principles within broad assignments making independent engineering decisions and using advanced engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers. Ability to write speeches and articles in a prescribed technique or style
  • Ability to prepare civil construction cost estimates. Ability to interpret and apply advanced mathematical and quantitative methods and procedures typically acquired through advanced professional training
  • Requires professional judgment and independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria
  • Requires skill and persuasion in dealings with others both inside and outside of the department
