Post Doctoral Fellow Lung Fibrosis

Massachusetts General Hospital
United States, Massachusetts, Boston
55 Fruit Street (Show on map)
Oct 07, 2025
Postdoctoral position available to study mechanisms of vascular biology, lung injury and lung fibrosis in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The Knipe Lab is looking for a hard-working and enthusiastic post-doctoral candidate to work on a funded project investigating mechanisms of endothelial cell dysfunction in the context of fibrosis in the lungs. We are interested in strategies to improve endothelial function in the context of fibrotic lung diseases like scleroderma associated ILD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). This project involved both animal modeling of lung disease (mice) and in vitro cell culture work with human microvascular endothelial cells.

Core Requirements

  • Ability to apply scientific expertise and judgement to design, execute, analyze and document in vitro and in vivo studies to define the role of endothelial dysfunction and vascular permeability in the development of fibrosis.
  • Hands-on expertise in molecular biology and in vivo disease models
  • Track record of significant contributions to research projects and scientific publications.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a highly collaborative team

Education/Experience

  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, or a related discipline with 0-1 year of relevant post-graduate experience

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

  • Mouse handling, husbandry and disease modeling including dissection and tissue harvesting is required. Experience with multiple routes of drug delivery is a plus.
  • Aseptic technique and in vitro culture of mammalian cells is required. Experience with primary cell isolation is a plus. Experience with 3D cultures is also desired but not required.
  • Proficiency with molecular biology techniques including western blotting and qRT-PCR is expected.
  • Exposure to basics of histology and microscopy including widefield and confocal imaging are a plus.
  • Exposure to flow cytometry and cell sorting is a plus.
  • Exposure to large data set analysis and/or bioinformatics is a plus.

The project is well-situated to generate high impact publications, presentations at conferences and prepare the post-doc for a long-term career in academia or industry. Applicants with prior post-doctoral experience are encouraged to apply. This position is NIH funded starting in 2025 for two years.

All interested candidates are encouraged to submit their CV/resume accompanied by a cover letter describing prior research experience to Dr. Knipe (rknipe@mgh.harvard.edu).
