This is the lead craft level of the Senior Transmission Technician. A Senior Transmission Technical Specialist will safely lead lower-level technicians in activities associated with line construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to have developed leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead large construction and maintenance activities of any complexity. Capable of serving as an interim supervisor, providing direction to crew members, serving on committees and resolving complex technical matters.

Responsibilities

Both roles perform with no Supervision and Latitude for Un-Reviewed Work and Decision-Making Authority

  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices

  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices

  • Exhibits the capacity to safely lead all jobs and work independent of direct leadership

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to organize construction and maintenance work and create over all implementation/maintenance plans

  • Total understanding of reading prints and determine how to isolate protection circuits without jeopardizing critical equipment

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to methodically/logically organize substation work activities

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to operate bucket, digger derrick truck other areal devices

  • Ability to respond to all call outs

  • Total understanding limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help

  • Advanced experience leading complex maintenance or construction projects

  • Total understanding of the processes needed for the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers or other temporary equipment

  • Total understanding of regulatory compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work

  • Totally competent to meet the requirements to maintain Switching and Tagging certification on both the Transmission and Distribution systems

  • Demonstrates superior verbal and written communications skills

Senior Transmission Substation Technical Specialist additional functions with no Supervision and Latitude for Un-Reviewed Work and Decision-Making Authority

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and leakage reactance testing and interpret results

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to perform infrared scanning substation equipment

  • Total understanding of AC and DC circuit principles

  • Adheres to Duke policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (NERC and/or SERC), properly and accurately documents test results with a timely completion

  • Total understanding of substation equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to complete maintenance/construction activities on all substation equipment including but not limited to switches, circuit breakers, transformers, regulators, PT's, CT's, CCVT's and grounding systems

  • Superior understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics systems

Senior Transmission Line Technical Specialist additional functions with no Supervision and Latitude for Un-Reviewed Work and Decision-Making Authority

  • Total understanding of the processes needed for the installation of switches

  • Total understanding of the processes needed to perform infrared scanning line equipment.

  • Total understanding of line equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices

  • Ability to sit for 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting on a transmission class equipment

  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment

  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths

  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat

  • Ability to distinguish colors

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED degree

  • In addition to required degree, 7 years related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Technology

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated the ability to fill in for the supervisor and lead complex construction and maintenance projects

  • Demonstrated availability for after- hour's work and call out rotation

  • Superior technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance frequently lead others

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities with internal and external customers

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

  • Provides coaches and mentors other Technicians

  • Provides superior level of leadership and sets a positive example for others to follow

  • Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

  • Superior written and oral communication skills

  • Software skills including word process, email, spreadsheets etc.

  • Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location

Specific Requirements

  • Must have a valid State Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver's License

  • Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance

  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

  • Transmission or Distribution substation maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related and educational experience

  • Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces

  • Minimum Requirements of Sr Substation Tech Spec:

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.

  • Minimum Requirements of Sr Line Tech Spec:

  • Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs
