The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Journeyman Plumber (Wastewater and Water Treatment Plant Operator) Public Works (Part Time) to provide support for our government customer on Kaua'i, Hawai'i.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under minimal supervision, the candidate will be responsible for independently performing assignments in support of the PMRF project through verbal instruction, written work orders, drawings, sketches, and blueprints while complying with federal, state, local codes and PMRF/Koa Lani procedures/safety requirements.
  • Specific task assignment and responsibilities include but are not limited to the maintenance, repair and alteration and installation of the following areas:
    • Sewage treatment plant and distribution system operations
    • Potable water treatment plant and distribution system operations
    • Fire hydrant flow testing and reporting
  • Performs laboratory analysis and testing for wastewater Biological Oxygen Demand, Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Settleometer, Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids Total Suspended Solids and Turbidity
  • Collects data and testing for Sewage Situation Report
  • Collect data testing for CDRL Chlorine and Fluoridation Sampling Report
  • Takes daily wastewater flow readings
  • Provides monthly data report for water and wastewater systems
  • Pumps out septic and cesspool wastewater holding tanks.
  • Removes sludge from the Oxidation Pond, processes it in the new drying bed, and disposes it in the county landfill
  • Performs monthly testing at the Mana Well for water level, pH, temperature and chloride conductivity
  • Coordinates the scheduling of annual water sampling requirements through the Department of Health (DOH) SCRS database.
  • Draws water samples for monthly bacteriological and annual DOH requirements for chemical, lead/copper, disinfectant byproduct and phase II and V water analysis and packages the samples for shipment to in and out of state laboratories
  • Provides weekly data entry required for Facilities Work Schedule
  • Assist with other shop PM and CM work activities
  • Responsible for maintaining work order documents, shop timecards, property records and hazmat inventories.
  • Responsible for care of Government equipment, tools, property and materials, and assure that they are properly maintained and safeguarded.
  • The candidate will assist the department Supervisor in developing the weekly Facilities Work Schedule.
  • Provides guidance to employees at lower classifications that are assigned to the Plumbing shop and coordinates with members of other activities to ensure quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Office conditions are varied and include physical tasks including lifting, pushing or pulling over 50 pounds (with a 2-person assist). Physical positions will include but not be limited to walking, standing for extended periods of time, and crawling, kneeling or cramped work, requiring repeated stooping. The environment will include customer contact, extended workdays, in a confined work area, field assignments, sometimes in inclement weather including outdoors with daily exposure to heat and sun glare, wet and noisy conditions as well as at heights and confined spaces.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • High School or equivalent
  • Evidence of completion of a military or recognized trade school or have a minimum four (4) years apprenticeship or equivalent work experience.
  • Must have forklift license: Must have ability to obtain appropriate State and Government licenses to operate forklifts up to 8 tons, stake trucks up to 5 tons and water tanker trucks.
  • State of Hawaii certification in small water and waste water systems operations and maintenance.
    • Grade 2 or higher for both water and wastewater systems
    • Grade 1 water treatment operator certificate
  • Must have a valid Hawaii Drivers License.
  • Must have CDL tanker truck license

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have knowledge of pump, electrical motor and chemical feeder operations and maintenance related to water and wastewater plants and distribution systems
  • Must be knowledgeable with pipe fitting terminology.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the safe use of hand and power tools related to the trade
  • The candidate must be able to effectively communicate and relate on a professional manner with customers and co-workers.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive experience in the specified and related field.
  • Must have the skill and knowledge to properly and safely use of tools and equipment associated with this trade.
  • Must demonstrate ability to comprehend and follow instructions verbally or from written documents, drawings or blueprints at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Able to work in and around sewage treatment and disposal areas.
  • Must have the following PC skills: Outlook

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Secret security clearance is required. (Applicants selected either must currently possess a Secret clearance or will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain clearance prior to commencement of employment and maintain a security clearance for access to classified information or Closed/Restricted Areas throughout duration of employment.)
