Job Description:

Responsibilities

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Affiliate I to join a new research laboratory that utilizes cutting-edge molecular genetic approaches to dissect mechanisms of fungal pathogenesis. The laboratory focuses on the fungal meningitis pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, which causes 1 in 5 HIV/AIDS-related deaths worldwide and is the top-ranked World Health Organization Fungal Priority Pathogen. The incumbent will work under the guidance of a Principal Investigator to carry out projects that will 1) build next-generation functional genetic tools to study Cryptococcus spp. pathogens; 2) implement unbiased, genome-wide approaches to define gene function in these organisms; and 3) perform mechanistic studies to dissect virulence pathways of interest. These projects provide training opportunities in multiple areas, including CRISPR technologies; next-generation sequencing; fungal molecular genetics; and animal infection models. Beyond research techniques, the incumbent will also receive training in compelling scientific writing and oral presentation skills. Responsibilities will also include maintenance of a detailed laboratory notebook documenting all experiments; contributing to laboratory organization and maintenance; presenting research findings at group meetings; and other appropriate relate duties.

This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

At least five years research experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology. Strong publication record, including at least one high-quality, first-author primary research article from PhD thesis work (co-first authorship and manuscripts in review/revision that have been deposited to a preprint server are acceptable). Experience in microbial transformation, PCR, molecular cloning, and next-generation sequencing. Previous experience in murine infection models is highly desirable but not required.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Travel up to 10% of the time will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting may be available on a very limited basis.

The incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment.

This position will require occasional work on weekends, after-hours, and holidays.
