Lab Head, Protein Biochemistry

At GSK, we are driven by bold ambitions to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. Our R&D team is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

Recognizing the Greater Boston area as a key hub for the biotech and pharma industry, we've expanded our footprint in Cambridge with state-of-the-art lab facilities. This investment builds upon GSK's long history of vaccine development to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccine technologies. Our robust infectious disease portfolio spans all stages of life, furthering our mission to improve global health outcomes.

As part of our plan to establish a new hub for viral vaccine discovery in Cambridge, we are building advanced laboratories dedicated to developing innovative methods that support deep product understanding, process and product development, and the testing of preclinical and clinical samples for viral vaccines.

The US Protein Biochemistry team at the GSK Vaccines R&D Center is seeking a highly motivated and visionary leader to serve as Lab Head, Protein Biochemistry. This role will lead efforts in designing, producing, screening, and characterizing vaccine antigen candidates. The team plays a critical role in providing protein biochemistry and biophysics expertise to advance viral vaccine discovery and development programs. Additionally, the team is responsible for implementing novel techniques and technologies to improve high-throughput generation and screening of vaccine candidates, including DNA cloning, protein expression, purification, and characterization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of 5-10 scientists focused on protein production, purification, and characterization to support vaccine R&D efforts.
  • Oversee production, purification, characterization, and analysis of protein vaccine antigens and antibodies.
  • Facilitate seamless transfer of selected candidates from preclinical research to technical development teams.
  • Provide scientific expertise and reagent support to preclinical, development, and life-cycle management projects.
  • Align team objectives with R&D and business priorities, ensuring activities are delivered according to project timelines and needs.
  • Effectively communicate technical data to GSK management and internal/external opinion leaders.
  • Inspire and lead with an enterprise mindset, fostering professional development and growth among team members.
  • Contribute to intellectual property and regulatory filings, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Take accountability for team tasks, ensuring data integrity, quality standards, and innovation of laboratory technologies to optimize resource utilization.
  • Oversee lab operations, ensuring compliance with GSK's Environment, Health, and Safety standards as a core element of our culture.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Protein Biochemistry or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in protein production and purification, high-throughput technologies, screening, and characterization.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience leading a team of protein scientists and fostering collaboration within a matrix organization.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in construct and protein expression optimization across multiple host systems, such as bacterial, yeast, insect, and mammalian cells.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in protein purification using chromatography systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a pharmaceutical research environment developing protein therapeutics and/or vaccine candidates.
  • Expertise in high-throughput protein production and purification, as well as biochemical and biophysical high-throughput screening assay development.
  • Familiarity with structure-based approaches for antigen design.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
