Your Role

Gensler San Francisco is searching for an experienced Global Aviation Terminal Planner to join our growing practice in the San Francisco office. The ideal candidate will be well versed in planning airport passenger terminal facilities with advanced knowledge of current aviation industry regulations pertaining to airport terminal planning.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as a resource for multiple projects throughout the firm.

  • Support and promote project opportunities, initially planning focused, for each and every region within the firm

  • Grow and support both the Domestic and non-US pipeline of work as a Global Aviation Planner.

  • Develop, mentor, and grow aviation planning talent. It is envisioned that the role will identify and mentor a rising planner, and the candidate will support ongoing efforts to grow aviation planning resources within the firm.

  • Foster and grow a group of aviation planners passionate individuals to lead the practice into the next generation, US based initially, migrating globally as the market opens up (within 5-years). Our focus is to work and build relationships with international partners and to build our reputation for design excellence through our work.

The Global Aviation Terminal Planner role is always focused on unlocking through design focused planning the opportunity for design excellence, and should include:

  • Terminal facility requirements analysis based on developed program needs assessment.

  • Terminal benchmarking for comparison to proposed solutions

  • Understanding of terminal airside and landside components, and how they interface with each other.

  • Terminal landside planning including terminal curbside, curbside vehicle lanes, vehicle parking and commercial vehicle planning and support equipment circulation/staging layout.

  • Security planning to include baggage handling systems and passenger security screening checkpoints.

  • Concessions planning and layout.

  • Terminal planning concept design development.

  • Application of current industry regulations and planning guidelines, including Level of Service and industry best practices.

  • Interface with federal aviation agencies such as CBP, TSA, FAA, and a cultivate deep understanding of their standards.

  • The goal of this position is not to compete with current planning partners mentioned above. Rather it is intended to be the bridge between their work and early terminal design exercises. We will continue to leverage off our international industry partners in expert areas such as passenger movement, simulation, acoustic design, accessibility, concessions, and all aspects of engineering, including technology and security, blast mitigation and structural integrity.

As a Global Aviation Terminal Planner, you will integrate the diverse needs of passengers, tenants, employees, and owners into resilient airport facilities that bring surprise and delight through experience-focused, award-winning aviation design. The role of Global Aviation Terminal Planner will consist of several key facets of this role:

  • 60-50% productive on Design Management (PM) and other aviation projects.

  • Initially, this will be in support of the team in San Francisco by being a planning resource for work within the Global Aviation Practice Area.

  • Travel for face-to-face workshops and meetings with clients will be required. For role assumptions, assume that this role is based in SF. The hours will be staffed by the San Francisco office based on project demands throughout the Practice area. Knowing that this role is to support the overall firm, the expectations is that staffing through the studio leader is coordinated with needs of the practice area.

  • 40 - 50% Business Development

  • The Global Aviation Planner will cultivate relationships in the industry and work with both Global Practice Area leaders and regional leaders to position our teams for winning work.

  • Similar to other global leaders, the costs for pursuits will be borne by individual project pursuit numbers.

Your Qualifications

  • Architectural degree with focus on aviation planning.

  • 10+ years of experience in the aviation field with recent terminal planning assignments.

  • Knowledge of current aviation industry regulations pertaining to airport terminal planning is required.

  • Familiarity with all terminal, landside and airside components.

  • Recent experience contributing to terminal facility planning design, phasing and implementation projects.

  • Experience managing aviation planning projects, preparing scope of work, project budgets and working collaboratively with project teams to ensure delivery of high-quality project deliverables.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communications (oral, verbal and written) skills are required for our fast-paced environment.

  • Knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars and Orders that pertain to airport planning and design.

  • Knowledge of NFPA requirements as they relate to airport projects.

  • Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Word, Excel, and other graphics related programs.

  • Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp or other 3-D modeling programs a plus.

**The base salary will be estimated between $105K to $190k plus bonuses and benefits and contingent on relevant experience. This role is not remote or hybrid; we look forward to working with our new team member in our incredible San Francisco | Offices | Gensler space.

Currently, the aviation practice area has centers of excellence in U.S., but we are expanding globally.
