UTeach at UT Austin includes the innovativeUTeachNatural Sciences teacher preparation program, a national expansion effort for that program, teacher professional development, and several local STEM education initiatives, all supporting the improvement of STEM education and the public education system overall.

Purpose

Advances the mission of UTeach by fostering a collaborative and safe learning environment. Through proactive support of the UTeach Primary Program and effective resource management, this role helps ensure the smooth operation and continuous improvement of STEM education initiatives. The coordinator's work contributes to the overall excellence and impact of teacher preparation at UT Austin.

Responsibilities
  • Manage lab equipment for UTeach, ensuring that equipment is in working order and items are fixed or replaced as necessary. Work with course instructors to have equipment necessary for classes/labs available at required class times. Train student workers and students on proper use of equipment.

  • Coordinate with faculty and staff on science purchasing for UTeach to support individual courses and program operations. During long semesters, this position will filter purchase requests to operations. During summer semester, this position will act as purchaser for UTeach Outreach summer camps. Research and identify vendors for correct items, work with vendors to ensure that items arrive by required deadlines.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise Learning Assistants for the UTeach Primary Program. Oversee weekly meetings that include pedagogy training.

  • Assist in recruiting and training UTeach student workroom assistants.

  • Maintain documentation outlining duties and responsibilities of student workers in all areas. Maintain documentation on departmental processes.

  • Act as safety officer and primary contact for EHS for labs in PAI and PMA buildings. Ensure that students have the proper safety training before using any hazardous chemicals. Reserve space for classes, workshops, and other related meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a science field or science education with five years of relevant experience.
  • One-year experience in supervising student workers.
  • One or more years in laboratory management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively coordinate workflow in a fast-paced office.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks, and follow UT policies while working independently to meet internal and external deadlines.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, organizational skills and positive attitude, with ability to pay great attention to detail and learn quickly.
  • Ability to problem solve, think critically, and consistently exercise a high degree of discretionary effort.
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Proven ability to maintain punctual, dependable hours on a regular basis and provide superior customer service.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in laboratory material and equipment management or lab supervisory work.
  • One or more years' experience working in Biology or Chemistry labs at UT Austin.
  • Strong background in chemical safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing and organizing large equipment storerooms.
  • Knowledge of UT Austin purchasing system.
  • Experience in working with the UTeach Program.
Salary Range

$58,000 + depending on qualifications
