Journalism Enhancing Programs

Job Description

The person in this 2-year position will organize and conduct in-person and online training for Investigative Reporters and Editors, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Missouri School of Journalism, including for data journalism bootcamps, online mini bootcamps, webinars, customized newsroom training, regional workshops and other venues. This person also will help plan and execute assigned facets of IRE's in-person and virtual national conferences and develop clear and useful training materials using investigative and data journalism tools, including AI. This person will have the opportunity to create new curricula to meet changing industry needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts training in investigative and data journalism in person for workshops, bootcamps, webinars, conference sessions and other venues as assigned. Researches wide range of investigative and data journalism topics specifically for those assigned trainings to customize presentations, identifying and securing materials specific to the target audience, finding/building case studies and creating new or updating existing worksheets to conduct hands-on, in-person training across the country.
  • Conducts assigned online training; researches investigative and data journalism topics to tailor that assigned online training (webinars, etc.) for the specific audiences, identifying and securing materials, creating tipsheets and sample databases as needed, depending on the assignment, to conduct effective, high quality virtual training.
  • Assists with conducting three annual conferences (two in person and one virtual) by identifying topic-appropriate speakers, making the initial outreach, securing availability, bios and photos and establishing session descriptions; assisting in establishing room counts; assisting with setting up stations on site; and performing other pre-conference and on-site tasks as directed.
  • Develops training materials, including Google Slides presentations, tipsheets and exercises, as well as new curricula to keep up with trends in the industry and to meet requests for custom training as assigned by supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Shift

40 hours per week; some nights and weekends

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with AI applications, Google slides (or PowerPoint) and spreadsheets; experience with coding in R or Python a plus

Anticipated Hiring Range

Hiring Salary Range: $69,097.60 - $74,000
