Salary Range: **$180,000 to $200,000 per year

** Starting salary is based on minimum education and years of experience and increases based on education and/or experience.

WOOD Federal Solutions, Inc. is launching a new Internal Research & Development (R&D) department focused on Artificial Intelligence and Automation. We are seeking a hands-on, technically proficient Director of R&D to lead this initiative. This is a solo contributor role with potential to grow into a team leadership position. The Director will be responsible for executing WOOD's AI vision, implementing automation aligned with the company's Gold Standard playbooks, and driving innovation across internal operations and federal solutions.

Responsibilities

    Define and execute WOOD's internal AI and automation strategy.
  • Serve as the automation agent for the organization, translating Gold Standard playbooks into working solutions.
  • Build prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and internal tools that streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency.
  • Support proposal development and technical solutioning.
  • Collaborate with Program Managers, Technical Directors, and BD teams to align R&D efforts with contract opportunities and internal priorities.
  • Maintain documentation and version control of automation scripts, models, and workflows.
  • Evaluate and integrate AI/ML platforms, APIs, and automation tools into WOOD's infrastructure.
  • Represent WOOD in technical exchanges, conferences, and industry forums.
  • Mentor interns or junior contributors as the department scales.
  • Report directly to the CEO and provide strategic input on future capability development.


Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in AI/ML development, automation engineering, or applied data science.
  • Strong hands-on experience with scripting, automation platforms, and AI frameworks (e.g., Python, Power Automate, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Proven ability to work independently and deliver results in a startup-like environment.
  • Familiarity with federal contracting, especially within DoD or Intelligence Community.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience implementing automation in tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • TS/SCI clearance with relevant polygraph.
  • PMP or equivalent program management certification.
  • Experience with SBIR/STTR, IRAD, or other federal R&D funding mechanisms.
  • Publications, patents, or open-source contributions in AI or automation.
