Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The Metra Police Department serves and protects commuters using the Metra system and Metra's property. The mission of the Metra Police is to safeguard the lives and property of the people they serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety. Metra Police work to expedite issues with the commuting public and handle vehicle accidents and trespasser incidents on Metra railroad and property. Metra Police actively engage and work with first responders as well as local, state and federal agencies during service disruptions and partner with these agencies on security planning. Their work ensures the safety of Metra's passengers and employees and reduces train delays. Reporting to the Chief of Police or designee, the Police Captain directs all uniform patrol officers and special forces, Detectives, Sergeants and Lieutenants, and oversees proactive policing of criminal activity; supervises and directs traditional police public safety incident response and assigns all uniformed officers to properly perform these functions; directs and oversees all required functions of the preliminary investigation process and scene stabilization, including documentation and drafting executive report summaries, where appropriate; provides testimony and support for court proceedings and liaison with agency representatives and company officials; develops and maintains information resources; renders first-aid; takes appropriate action in the interest of public safety and performs other related duties as required. The Police Captain, if so assigned, will supervise work assigned to the Investigative Division and direct the work flow and direction of investigative follow up. The primary duties include: Oversees the collaborate effort through direct daily interaction as a primary liaison for Metra's law enforcement team and law enforcement officials at all levels of local, county, state, and federal agencies. Directs functions and collaborates to further departmental objectives of effectiveness and compliance, including working with senior officials as directed by the Chief of Police; works closely with department heads within Metra as well as members of the community. Writes thorough and detailed reports; ensures documentation and to appropriately update key officials with critical and sensitive information key details is complete; a testifies competently in trials and other proceedings. Responsible for oversight of Metra's preliminary law enforcement response into deaths or critical incidents on Metra owned, leased, or controlled properties and equipment. Provides functions and responds to duties, when required, as an on-call 24/7 department representative. Approve time off, coordinate staff schedules, fill vacancies as necessary, and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives. Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures. Make recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Drive a police vehicle under emergency and non-emergency conditions. Be physically able to execute defensive tactic maneuvers, as trained. Fire a weapon on duty with the prescribed degree of accuracy. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
