WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The American Red Cross is currently seeking an International Security and Operations Lead. This position may be based anywhere within the United States, with a preference for candidates located in the Central or Eastern time zones.

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Quality, Data, & Operations, the International Security and Operations Lead support the American Red Cross' global safety and security framework by monitoring threats, planning for, and coordinating incident response, and ensuring compliance with security standards. Under minimal guidance, this position maintains strong networks with internal and external partners, supports international travel risk management, assesses security environments and planning for international deployments and operations, and leads the review and maintenance of security policy, procedures, and documentation. Through proactive analysis, training, and operational support, the International Security & Operations Lead enhances the organization's readiness and resilience in dynamic global environments. The position provides support, development, and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD

  • Leverage global security networks, Red Cross partners and security providers to monitor and identify global security incidents and trends with the potential to impact the department's operations. Produce relevant security assessments and reports for management review.
  • Maintain relationships with domestic American Red Cross enterprise partners in Security, Risk, and Travel, Red Cross movement partners, NGO security networks, and sector specific working groups to ensure coordination and alignment with industry standards
  • Develop and administer processes to continuously improve safety and security for international staff and operations
  • Track the organization's international travel and brief travelers/surge deployments in accordance with the department's travel risk management protocols
  • Conduct reviews of country level security documentation and security risk management frameworks for adherence to Minimum Security Standards, American Red Cross policies and partnership agreements
  • Maintain the department's incident reporting systems and facilitate incident response, including those for critical incidents
  • Promote security awareness and management practices within the department through technical training, orientations, table-top exercises, and other informational resources
  • Lead Duty of Care for International Services; partner with the enterprise and Movement on Duty of Care standards and implementation
  • Administer and advise on service contacts with security related vendors including travel management and travel insurance
  • Analyze operating practices. Recommend revisions to improve established procedures and bring into alignment with movement, organization, and department minimum standards
  • Support international security as needed for Red Cross workforce outside of International Services, including for Service to the Armed Forces
  • Engage and lead volunteer recruitment and management to support projects and tasks for the security unit and operations.
  • Collaborate with Country and Division offices to enhance context specific security solutions and scale security focal points' global capability

Functions as an individual contributor with full proficiency in applying specialized security knowledge and practices. Leverages several years of experience in physical security operations, threat assessment, and emergency preparedness. Performs duties independently, ensuring adherence to established security policies and protocols. Provides guidance, instruction, or coaching to other security personnel as required.

PAY INFORMATION

The salary range for this position is (Washington, DC): $89,040 -$118,680.

Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.

This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience:
Minimum 4 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Management Experience: N/A
Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated experience integrating innovative approaches to solving humanitarian challenges. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. Experience working with and within the Red Cross/Red Crescent network is preferred. Experience working collaboratively with local/national partners. Experience and familiarity with concepts of international humanitarian or development work and physical safety/security management. Must be responsible and self-motivated. Candidate must have strong verbal and written communications skills and must demonstrate familiarity with evolving industry standards. Ability to work on a team.
Travel: 10-25%

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
