The MEL enables end-to-end prototyping of superconducting electronics, quantum computing circuits, radiation-hardened devices, and advanced imaging sensors. MEL combines cutting-edge tools and processes with collaborative, hands-on experimentation to translate innovative designs into mission-ready technologies. Students working in the MEL gain exposure to real-world challenges across wafer fabrication, process engineering, and data-driven optimization-contributing directly to the Laboratory's legacy of engineering excellence and impact. Microfabrication Summer Intern The Microelectronics Laboratory is seeking students eager to apply their science and engineering skills in the US Government's most capable wafer fabrication facility. Successful candidates will create and improve wafer fabrication processes by designing, running and analyzing experiments for processes supporting technologies like superconducting electronics, quantum computing circuits, radiation hardened electronics and charge coupled imagers. Potential focus areas include photolithography, reactive ion etching, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, wafer bonding, wet chemical processing and ion implantation. An undergraduate background in physics, chemistry, engineering or statistics and a willingness to work in a cleanroom are key requirements. Candidates must also have enthusiasm for solving problems and an interest in teaming. Summer Research Program Overview
The Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers. As an SRP intern, you'll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events-all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers.
Compensation Hourly pay rates below are effective January 2025 - December 2025 and will be reviewed again for Summer 2026.
