Overview
The College of Arts and Sciences at Utah State University invites external applications for an associate or full professor of professional practice beginning on August 1, 2026.

Successful applicants will demonstrate excellence in teaching (70%), and effectiveness in research (20%) and service (10%) through engagement in the fields of conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Competitive candidates will either have a terminal degree (e.g., PhD, JD or MFA) with ten years of professional experience or a master's degree with more than ten years of professional experience.

This position is open with respect to disciplinary field and substantive focus, but conflict management skills are most desired, including mediation, facilitation, negotiation, and international diplomacy. Desired subject matter expertise includes conflict in the domains of the economy, environment, interpersonal relations, public health, and intergroup relations (e.g., interfaith conflict, violent conflict, conflict processes, etc.).

This is a renewable academic year, nine-month position with the opportunity for summer employment, dependent on the availability of funds. The candidate will have an appointment within an academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences but will spend two-thirds effort toward the Heravi Peace Institute.

Responsibilities
Consistent with its mission, the Heravi Peace Institute offers a variety of opportunities for faculty members to engage with learners, both matriculated students seeking formal academic credit and community members seeking to develop their capabilities as peacebuilders. Teaching will be, by far, the largest component of this faculty position, so the incumbent will be expected to maintain the equivalent of a three-course teaching assignment each semester, with the understanding that this may include a combination of formal (for-credit) and informal (non-credit) instruction.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

To be considered at the rank of associate professor of professional practice, the candidate must meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a field engage in research, teaching, or practice related to peacebuilding
  • At least ten years of relevant professional experience beyond formal academic training
  • Potential for excellence in teaching, with potential effectiveness in research and service.
  • Accreditation in conflict management skills (e.g., mediation) from a recognized organization (either within Utah or nation-wide)

Preferred Qualifications:

To be considered at the rank of professor of professional practice, the candidate must have the following preferred qualifications:
  • A terminal degree (e.g., PhD, JD, or MFA) in a field engage in research, teaching, or practice related to peacebuilding
  • Ability to develop, deliver, and assess skills-based training for USU students, staff, and faculty, as well as community members.
  • Ability to identify and develop community engagement initiatives, building partnerships between the HPI and external stakeholders.
