Job Summary

Involves managing or performing the administrative services or managing the full general operations of an academic or non-academic organization(s). Administrative services include activities in finance and human resources and may also include IT, facilities, or student services. General management activities include long and short range strategic planning in determining the mission and directing all activities of multi-disciplinary departments through subordinate management staff.

The Business Specialist plays a critical role in the School of Nursing by overseeing faculty pay plans, ensuring compliance with UCSF's compensation policies, and supporting assmiliation processes for faculty and staff. Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance, this position ensures faculty Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) distributions are accurate, transparent, and aligned with faculty activities, teaching assignments, and institutional guidelines.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF School of Nursing fosters excellence, diversity and innovation. It consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation for its academic programming and the amount of NIH funding it secures to conduct innovative research that improves health and health care.

The UCSF School of Nursing Dean's Office provides leadership and support to four academic departments and an organized research unit, on top of providing support to learners, faculty and staff. The School of Nursing Office of Communications and Marketing is a highly collaborative team that is responsible for school-wide strategic communications for internal and external audiences.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area; and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in business operations, preferably within higher education, healthcare, or a nonprofit environment.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs, including TAMS
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial operations.
  • Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on operational oversight.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.
  • Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service.
  • Familiarity with nursing, nursing school operations or healthcare education operations
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards and compliance in healthcare education is desirable.
