Technical Writer

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Technical Writer revises or writes standardized material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, SOPs, and related administrative publications concerned with work methods and procedures, and installation, operation, and maintenance of ranges and training areas. Receives technical direction from supervisor, notes, or manuals containing operating procedures and details TC's, FM's, drawings, and other data related to operation, maintenance, and service of range and training areas. Utilizes RFMSS, ArcGIS, and Range Manager's Toolkit (RMTK) to plan, coordinate, schedule, and develop standard and non-standard range requirements. Drafts, calculates, and submits SDZs and WDZs for approval by the appropriate authority for current and future weapons systems, training events, and munitions based upon unit requirements and emerging fielding of new equipment. Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology. Maintains records and files of work and revisions, selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material, assists in laying out material for publication, and arranges for typing, duplication, and distribution of material. Possesses an understanding of military training requirements and live fire training events for a wide variety of Army military occupational specialties. Manages the Command Tracker program and the AVOID database in support of aviation operations and location tracking for garrison activities.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in technical writing, editing, and documentation.





  • Proficiency in writing and editing technical reports, manuals, SOPs, and other administrative publications.





  • Familiarity with military training requirements, live fire training events, and Army military occupational specialties.





  • Experience utilizing RFMSS, ArcGIS, and Range Manager's Toolkit (RMTK) for planning and scheduling range requirements.





  • Ability to interpret technical data, including TC's, FM's, drawings, blueprints, sketches, and specifications.





  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure clarity, conciseness, and adherence to standards.





  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other relevant software.





SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:




  • US citizenship.





  • Ability to effectively communicate with military organizations, military leaders, and civilian leaders.





  • Valid US driver's license and ability to maintain installation driving privileges.





  • Ability to pass all security requirements IAW military installation Provost Marshall's Policy to gain access to the installation.

Working Environment:

The work environment consists of both office and field settings within the Fort Rucker Gunnery Range and Training Complex. The position may require frequent visits to range and maintenance sites, including exposure to noise, weather, and outdoor conditions typical of live-fire training environments. The Project Manager may be required to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays based on mission schedules and contract needs.
