Summary:

The objective of this position is to provide comprehensive safety oversight, coordination, and administrative support for live-fire and training operations conducted within the Fort Rucker Gunnery Range and Training Complex. The Firing Desk Safety personnel serve as the primary point of contact for range control communications, ensuring all range activities are conducted in compliance with U.S. Army and installation safety standards, range regulations, and local operating procedures.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant training environments by monitoring range usage, enforcing safety protocols, logging operations, and assisting with incident prevention and response coordination.

Job Duties:




  • Operate the Firing Desk to monitor and control range activities in accordance with Fort Rucker Range Control Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).





  • Maintain real-time communication with range users, training units, and Range Control personnel via radio, phone, or digital systems.





  • Verify range clearances, firing authorizations, and safety certifications prior to commencement of live-fire exercises.





  • Maintain accurate logs of range usage, firing times, munitions expended, and personnel present during operations.





  • Enforce safety procedures, range restrictions, and environmental protection policies throughout all range activities.





  • Assist in coordinating cease-fire procedures, emergency responses, and medical evacuations in accordance with established protocols.





  • Ensure proper signage, flags, and range status indicators are displayed and visible during operations.





  • Support the setup and teardown of range operations as needed, ensuring that range areas are left in safe, serviceable condition.





  • Report range safety violations, incidents, or hazards to Range Control and supervisory personnel immediately.





  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of range operations, maintenance, and training missions.





Basic Qualifications:




  • High school diploma or equivalent required.





  • Minimum of 2 years' experience supporting range operations, firing desk, or safety functions in a U.S. Army or DoD environment.





  • Knowledge of U.S. Army range safety procedures, AR 385-63 (Range Safety), and DA PAM 385-63.





  • Ability to read and interpret range maps, overlays, and safety diagrams.





  • Proficient in radio and communications equipment operation.





  • Proficient in aircraft radio and communications





  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness in high-tempo environments.





  • Must be able to obtain and maintain installation access credentials.





  • Must be able to perform shift work.





  • Possess a valid U.S. driver's license.





  • Must be a U.S. Citizen





Preferred Qualifications:




  • Prior military service, particularly in range operations, safety, or training support roles.





  • Certification as Range Safety Officer (RSO) or completion of U.S. Army Range Safety Course.





  • Experience working on live-fire ranges, gunnery ranges, or training complexes.





  • Familiarity with Fort Rucker range operations and local SOPs.





  • Associate's degree in safety, management, or related field preferred.





  • ATC or Forward Controller experience.

Working Environment:

The work environment includes both indoor firing desk and outdoor range areas. The position may involve exposure to noise, dust, and weather conditions typical of live-fire environments. Personnel must be able to work flexible shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, in support of training schedules. Duties may involve extended periods of sitting, standing, or monitoring communications equipment.
