Position Summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented student to fill the newly created role of Fire Safety Assistant within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) unit.

SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Safety Manager and the Fire Safety team, the Fire Safety Assistant will support routine inspection and maintenance activities related to campus fire safety. Responsibilities include assisting with fire extinguisher and fire suppression system checks. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and flexible scheduling is available within this timeframe.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with the inspection of fire suppression and fire-extinguishing systems.

Support the relocation, inspection, and maintenance of fire extinguishers across campus.

Perform miscellaneous job-related tasks as assigned, in alignment with the mission, strategic priorities, and annual programming of EHS.

Training provided; willingness to learn.

Customer service experience and ability to work with vendors.

Professional interaction with students, staff, faculty, and community partners.

Clear and effective oral and written communication.

Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain confidentiality.

Basic word processing and data entry skills.

Ability to draft and edit written materials.

Strong organization, coordination, and time-management skills.

Excellent customer service with diverse populations.

Proficiency with Zoom and Microsoft Office Suite (including Teams).

Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
