A Brief Overview

The full-time Research Semester Intern plays an integral role in supporting high-impact research initiatives at Endeavor Health. This position is tailored for a PhD student specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision, offering immersive experience in clinical research workflows and advanced algorithm development. The intern will contribute both to general research operations and to specialized AI-driven projects, including development of computer vision models for dynamic pelvic floor ultrasound.

General Research Responsibilities
  • Conduct literature reviews to support protocol development, algorithm design, and statistical analysis.
  • Assist in maintaining IRB documentation and supporting grant-related submissions.
  • Support development of study forms, REDCap databases, and data collection systems.
  • Thoroughly read and understand assigned protocols, ensuring adherence to all study requirements.
  • Complete required NIH and NorthShore Research Institute training modules.
  • Coordinate study procedures with research staff, providers, and external collaborators.
  • Communicate with clinical departments to support study implementation.
  • Perform chart abstractions with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Maintain organized and accurate study documentation for all ongoing projects.
  • Manage data, ensure data integrity, and assist with database creation and maintenance. Contribute to statistical analyses, manuscript drafting, abstract submissions, and presentation development.
  • Assist in preparing and submitting annual IRB continuing review reports in collaboration with the PI.
AI, Computer Vision & Algorithm-Focused Responsibilities
  • Develop, train, and optimize computer vision models for dynamic pelvic floor ultrasound imaging.
  • Build deep learning pipelines for segmentation, feature extraction, motion tracking, and classification tasks.
  • Handle medical imaging datasets, including preprocessing, annotation oversight, and quality control.
  • Implement and iterate on ML workflows using PyTorch, TensorFlow, MONAI, scikit-image, and related CV frameworks.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, cross-validation, and error analyses to refine algorithm accuracy.
  • Participate in developing clinical integration strategies for AI tools, including prototype testing.
  • Collaborate with clinical team members to translate algorithmic outputs into clinically interpretable metrics.
  • Contribute AI-specific content to manuscripts, scientific posters, and grant submissions.
What You Will Need
  • Education: Current PhD student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or a related discipline.
  • Experience: Prior experience in research strongly preferred (AI/ML, computer vision, or human subjects research). Experience with medical imaging or healthcare datasets is beneficial but not required.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow). Experience with computer vision libraries: OpenCV, scikit-image, MONAI, SimpleITK. Ability to manage and analyze large datasets.nFamiliarity with Microsoft Office, Git, Jupyter, and research documentation workflows. Strong organizational and scientific communication skills.
