Summary:

A registered, professional nurse who has demonstrated expertise in wound/ostomy/continence nursing. This nurse provides expert clinical leadership through direct patient care, education, and consultation to nursing and other disciplines in order to meet the complex needs of wound/ostomy/continence patients and their families. The CWOCN provides for continuity in assessment, planning, and evaluation of patient needs from admission through discharge and in the MMC outpatient setting. The CWOCN promotes evidence based practice and plays a principal role in quality initiatives to assure best outcomes for patients and families. Functions under the general supervision of the Director, Center for Clinical & Professional Development.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: Knowledge of nursing theory, practice and education in order to develop and maintain a program in wound/ostomy care for inpatients, outpatients, and families acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's Degree program in Nursing is preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Current license and registration to practice professional nursing as required by the State of Maine.
  3. Experience: Comprehensive knowledge in wound/ostomy care and clinical nursing practices normally acquired during three years of progressively more responsible related experience. CWON required.
  4. Analytical abilities necessary to serve as a resource, evaluate and revise educational programs based on experience and patient performance.
  5. Interpersonal skills required to instruct patient and families and to serves as a resource person for registered nurses and other health care professionals in and outside the hospital who are involved in the care of wound/ostomy patients.
