Essential Job Duties
Join NC State's Utilities and Engineering Services Department, where your expertise keeps our campus energized, resilient, and moving forward. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Utilities Senior Line Technician to support, maintain, and enhance the university's electrical power systems across more than 2,000 acres of facilities, classrooms, research spaces, and campus infrastructure.
This role is an integral part of the Utilities and Engineering Services team, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient power across NC State. We're looking for individuals who excel in technical precision, enjoy solving complex challenges, and thrive in collaborative environments. By contributing your expertise to this essential campus operation, you'll make a meaningful impact every day while joining the dedicated professionals who keep the Wolfpack community powered and safe.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Lead teams in constructing, operating, maintaining, and repairing the university's electrical power systems, including overhead and underground lines.
  • Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical systems across all campuses.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair campus emergency generators.
  • Maintain and repair campus street and area lighting systems.

  • Construct and install power system components to deliver electric service to new and existing buildings.
  • Inspect systems to evaluate maintenance needs and determine repair priorities.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues using diagnostic tools such as Fluke meters, voltmeters, power meters, and computer tracking software.
  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate safety hazards, including electric shock, falls, burns, and chemical exposure.
  • Plan and perform daily work activities efficiently to support department goals.
  • Safely operate specialized equipment, including line trucks.
  • Collaborate with power distribution electricians and escalate complex issues to supervisors as needed.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 90 pounds, working outdoors in various conditions, and operating in elevated or confined spaces while maintaining safety and accuracy, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, team members, and the university community and follow verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Maintains required certification(s).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in underground and overhead power distribution systems.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including high-voltage operations, diagnostics, and equipment maintenance.
  • Skilled in interpreting electrical schematics, system diagrams, and construction plans to support accurate installations and repairs.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance systems (e.g., AiM) and comfort with digital documentation and reporting tools.
  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills, with the ability to mentor, guide, and support less experienced technicians.

Required License or Certification

  • Commercial Driver's License Class A
  • NC Commercial Driver's License Class A within 60 days of hire, must be maintained.
