Summary of Position

Our client is seeking a full-time Senior Accountant to work under the guidance and supervision of the Vice President of Finance and Administration. This role is responsible for managing the organization's accounting and financial operations, spanning day-to-day transactional activities through higher-level financial planning and analysis.

The Senior Accountant ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements while supporting sound financial stewardship across the organization. Responsibilities include oversight of accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, bank reconciliations, and the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. The role also includes maintaining the general ledger, managing grant and restricted fund accounting, and supporting audits and regulatory filings.

Essential Responsibilities General Accounting
  • Maintain the organization's general ledger, including preparation and review of monthly journal entries and supporting schedules; reconcile accounts for accuracy prior to approval.
  • Produce timely monthly financial statements and provide clear explanations of budget variances.
  • Import and reconcile revenue receipts from the organization's point-of-sale and constituent database system into the accounting system, ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Analyze revenues and expenses monthly to ensure accurate classification and reporting.
  • Perform balance sheet and account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
  • Generate grant-related financial reports to support pre-award and post-award requirements.
  • Prepare and file sales and use tax payments and related reporting for retail activity.
  • Maintain fixed asset records within the accounting system.
  • Lead preparation for the annual financial audit, including mid-year audit reviews.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Finance & Administration on development and administration of the annual budget.
  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc analyses as assigned.
Payroll Administration
  • Prepare and process payroll accurately and on a timely basis, including associated payments and reporting.
  • Set up and train new employees on the organization's timekeeping system.
  • Oversee payroll provider information and reporting to ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations.
Job Requirements

Education, Experience, Skills, and Qualities Required

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including experience within a nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost control principles, and experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and audits.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Financial Edge preferred) and point-of-sale or constituent database systems (Altru preferred).
  • Strong computer skills, including electronic fund transfer platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Frequent listening and speaking on the phone.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues across the organization.
  • Occasional need to move files or office supplies weighing up to 10 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

The successful candidate will receive an annual salary in the range of $65,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package, which may include:
