Access Control Technician

Job Summary

The Access Control Technician is responsible for installing, servicing, and maintaining commercial access control systems and related security hardware. This role requires strong technical expertise across a range of access control and video surveillance technologies, along with effective troubleshooting skills to ensure reliable system performance, safety compliance, and customer satisfaction.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install, configure, and commission access control hardware, including magnetic locks, electric strikes, card readers, and control panels.



  • Perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on access control systems and associated security devices.



  • Service and troubleshoot IP and analog cameras, as well as Network Video Recorders (NVRs).



  • Configure and maintain access control system interfaces, including credential management, access levels, door schedules, and system settings.



  • Apply basic IP networking knowledge to configure and troubleshoot devices such as switches, routers, and port forwarding.



  • Install, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling (e.g., 22/4, 20/4, CAT5e, CAT6) for security systems.



  • Organize, label, and dress cabling from IT closets to device locations to maintain clean and efficient cable management.



  • Build, organize, and maintain security equipment racks and cable pathways, including J-hooks and D-rings.



  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and layouts to support installation and service activities.



  • Communicate professionally with clients and team members, delivering high-quality customer service.



  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a safe, hazard-free work environment.




Job Requirements




  • High School Diploma or GED.



  • Minimum of 3 years of experience installing and servicing commercial access control systems.



  • Experience with access control platforms such as Lenel, Avigilon, Verkada, Premise, and Wisenet.



  • Working knowledge of IP addressing and network troubleshooting (1 year or more preferred).



  • Manufacturer or product certifications related to security systems (preferred).



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.



  • OSHA 10 certification (preferred).



  • Scissor lift and/or boom lift certification (preferred).



  • Ability to work on ladders or lifts, in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds (up to 75 pounds with assistance).



  • Ownership of basic hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose and channel lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, tool pouch, and steel or composite toe boots.




Work Experience




  • Three or more years of hands-on experience in commercial access control installation and service.



  • Familiarity with CCTV systems and IP-based networking environments.
