Summary

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Language Services or designee, the Staff Interpreter provides comprehensive language access services to support safe, equitable, and patient-centered care. This role delivers accurate oral interpretation and written translation services for patients, families, and employees with limited English proficiency across all care settings.

The Staff Interpreter translates written materials, supports document review for linguistic accuracy, and serves as a resource on language access requirements and best practices. The role includes providing in-service education to clinical and non-clinical departments to promote awareness and appropriate use of Language Services resources.

Staff Interpreters also represent Language Services by providing interpretation at community events hosted by, or in partnership with, Lee Health. The position facilitates effective communication between patients, families, guests, and multidisciplinary teams, responds to customer needs in a timely and service-focused manner, and performs all duties with a focus on patient safety, quality, and experience. Fluency in oral and written English and the designated target language is required. Requirements

Education:High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelors degree preferred.

Experience:Experience in the health field and in interpretation for medical personnel preferred. A minimum of 2 (two) years speaking English and the other language source. Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting and translation with medical interpretation certificate is required.

Certification: Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI-CCHI), or National Certified Medical Interpreter (NCMI-NBCMI, or equivalent nationally recognized medical interpreter certification

License:N/A

Other:Must have excellent communication and customer service skills; a good working knowledge of computer applications, e.g., internet, Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point); critical thinking skills; ability to work independently. Must be able to read, write, and speak English and the other language source. Must be able to function in an environment in which client may be seriously ill and receiving acute/emergency care, including life threatening events and end of life issues. Demonstrates good judgment in dealing with ethical issues that may arise. Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, their families, and health care staff. Should be familiar with anatomy, physiology, and medical concepts and terminology. Must be able to accurately translate written documents on occasion. Demonstrated ability to interpret verbal and transcribe written medical and rehabilitative information in both the foreign language as well as the English language. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cultural differences that exist within cultures. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, decision-making ability to manage caseload and time. Ability to prioritize work schedule. Must be flexible and able to travel between patient care areas and other off-site facilities to maintain staff coverage. Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule.
