Wisconsin Public Media (WPM), a division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking an individual to join our team as the Facilities Planning Manager. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to apply your facilities-related technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership skills in support of public media operations across the state.

The Facilities Planning Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting statewide media services, PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio. Reporting to the Director of Facilities and working within the Director's Office, this individual will collaborate with WPM leadership, staff, and statewide partners to plan, coordinate, and implement facilities-related initiatives. The role requires a blend of technical proficiency, project management acumen, administrative know-how and interpersonal skill to navigate complex challenges and deliver impactful solutions.

As the Facilities Planning Manager, you will:


  • Work with colleagues to plan long-term capital improvements and prepare biennial capital budget requests that support maintenance and capital renewal to ensure reliability of facilities and equipment used for media production and broadcast.

  • Recommend resource allocation in alignment WPM, UW-Madison and Universities of Wisconsin strategic priorities and protocols.

  • Serve as the Divisional Representative to plan implementation of and contribute to management of capital projects, including space renovations, furniture and equipment installations, and transmitter site renewals, from concept to completion.

  • Lead space planning and design efforts to optimize facility usage and support organizational goals.

  • Serve as a liaison between WPM and other university divisions (particularly Facilities Planning & Management, "FPM"), fostering strong relationships and cross-functional coordination.


The well-qualified candidate for WPM's Facilities Planning Manager position will demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams. A typical day might likely include use of a wide variety of skills including: strategic thinking and leadership to facilitate planning across business units; creating options and implementing pragmatic solutions to complex problems; systematically organizing records using various software tools; or accurately estimating costs to inform capital projects. Proven project management experience, especially in construction and facilities, will serve the selected candidate well. Familiarity with site planning, architectural design, building systems (including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and safety), and ADA compliance is valuable.

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position.

This position is Ongoing/Renewable.

This position will primarily be on site with the option of being hybrid, with an expectation of a minimum of 4 days per week in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location headquartered in Madison, WI. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. In addition, some limited amount of travel to statewide locations may be necessary. The final schedule can be discussed in the offer stage, but fully remote candidates will not be accepted. Remote work requires an approved flexible work agreement (FWA). An FWA requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer. Per University policy, transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable and will be at the expense of the employee.

Primarily work a standard work schedule from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm onsite at Vilas Communication Hall on the UW-Madison campus; open to discussing some flexibilities with respect to work schedule and up to one day remote work per week. This position may require responsiveness and the ability to address urgent needs that arise outside of standard business hours.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information to ensure timely and safe transitioning of major construction or remodeling projects
  • Collaborates with Division Executives and partners to prepare capital budget requests and project implementation approaches that align with strategic priorities, and address maintenance and renewal of facilities and equipment that conform with compliance standards and ensure high-functioning media production and broadcast.

  • Schedules logistics and secures resources to resolve facility issues, recommending alternatives where necessary
  • Manages and directs operational functions and planning of one or multiple facilities or projects to foster innovative solutions

  • Serve as a liaison between WPM and other university divisions (particularly Facilities Planning & Management, "FPM"), fostering strong relationships and cross-functional coordination.


  • Assists with the development, execution, and utilization of strategic planning analysis to determine long term needs and develop sustainable solutions
  • May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • Reviews, evaluates, approves, and provides recommendations for facility improvements, space assignments, and proposals utilizing best practices and established policies and procedures

  • Serves as the Divisional Representative to contribute to management of capital projects, including space renovations, furniture and equipment installations, and transmitter site capital renewals, from concept to completion.


  • Assists with developing operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, best practices, and unit objectives

Compensation:

Typical salary range for this position is $80,000 - $95,000. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing facilities, including identifying maintenance, repair, and replacement needs
  • Exceptional interpersonal collaboration with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and contractors
  • Demonstrated skills organizing, synthesizing, and communicating complex facilities-related content to multiple stakeholder groups

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional project management experience focused on facilities projects
  • Experience in a public institution of higher education or a state government agency
  • Experience with Wisconsin state capital budget planning
  • Understanding of media production and broadcasting
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer, Architect, Landscape Architect, or related profession OR maintains certifications, such as Project Management Institute (PMI) PCP certification or similar project management credentials; APPA Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP); IFMA Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or Facility Management Professional (SFP), or similar facilities management training and/or credentialing

Education:

Bachelor's degree preferred; focus in engineering, architecture, facilities management or related planning and design field preferred.
