SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of the Cardiovascular Institute and the Lead Supervisor for Cardiac Surgery40947337 class=has-tooltipfirst assists in cardiac surgery cases and assists in pre, intra and post-operative management of patients. Primary responsibility is in the operating room and during times outside of the operating room writes admission, pre-operative and post-operative orders for patient care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Position consists of 4- 10 hour shifts with out of hospital call covering nights, weekends, and holidays providing comprehensive patient care in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative setting with primary focus being the operating room.Obtains and records detailed medical histories; performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations; records pertinent progress notes in the medical records; prepares discharge summaries.Prepares initial patient orders for admission, pre-and post-operative care including diet, fluids, activity, laboratory studies, diagnostic imaging, and medications as directed by the physician in accordance with hospital procedures.Intra-operative first assisting in all cardiac surgical procedures, endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting, and femoral arterial-venous cut downs, intra-aortic balloon placement. Writes operative procedure notes and assists in transport of the patient from the operating room to the intensive care unit.Inserts and removes chest tubes; removes temporary epicardial pacing wires; removes sutures and staples; performs arterial punctures for arterial blood gas specimens; inserts nasogastric tubes, peripheral IV lines, central venous lines, arterial lines; catheterizes the bladder; cleans, debrides, dressings for woundsMay perform other duties as requested by staff physicians or attending physicians, including care of selected patients on both the medical and surgical services and initiating consultative services on behalf of the CVT surgery service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:An extremely high level of analytical ability to apply post-surgical training to the treatment of patients.Good interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and nursing personnel. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.EXPERIENCE:Ideal candidates would have some surgical experience in first assisting. Three months on-the-job training and experience to become familiar with job responsibilities and work routines. All applicants should possess a high level of ability to function with significant clinical autonomy.WORK ENVIRONMENT ANDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Physician Assistants must be graduates of an accredited PA program with current NCCPA certification.Nurse Practitioners must be graduates of a Nurse Practitioner program and certified by the ANCC or by the AANP.Candidates should hold or be eligible for licensure in the state of Rhode island as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, eligible for licensure for Federal DEA certificate. Completed approved BLSCLS courses within 2 years.INDEPENDENT ACTION:Performs independently within the departments policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:None.

Pay Range:

$132,600.00-$214,198.40
