Job Summary

The STEP Success Specialist will report to the Associate Director, STEP Success. Works directly with FTIC students admitted through the Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway (STEP). Assists the student in progressing through the first year of college through various projects and initiatives that promote retention, re-enrollment, and timely graduation. Collaborates with the Associate Director, STEP Success and partners in other student support units across the University. Provides feedback and insights to improve outreach strategies and support student success.

  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director, carries out targeted projects to promote retention/re-enrollment, and progression to timely graduation, of students admitted through the Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway (STEP).
  • Closely monitors the re-enrollment and progression of the students in their assigned STEP population(s). Executes proactive and reactive interventions based on the data provided by the Associate Director.
  • Conducts outreach to students who miss critical performance and/or course milestones. Meets with students to provide guidance and support based on academic performance, major, and intended career goals. Escalates issues to Associate Director for resolution.
  • Conducts outreach to, and meets with, STEP Pathway students who do not meet progression standards for their intended major. Facilitates redirection into a new major and assists with the change of major process as appropriate.
  • Documents all outreaches and meetings with students. Keeps detailed records of all student interactions across various platforms as needed.
  • Assists with STEP Orientation and STEP Advising & Registration Days for students admitted via the STEP Pathway.
  • Provides support for the SLS Plus course for STEP, including but not limited to facilitation of workshops and group advising sessions, and tracking completion of requirements.
  • Monitors enrollment of STEP pathway students in designated sections of various courses, such as SLS 1501, math courses, English courses, and other first year courses. Assists with enrollment of students into designated sections as needed.
  • Utilizes technology to manage a caseload of STEP pathway students as an additional support role, in addition to a student's assigned academic advisor.
  • Responds to students messages, phone calls, voicemails, and other inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Identifies common roadblocks or barriers for students in the STEP pathways and shares with the Associate Director.
  • Engages in professional development to further job knowledge and skills in areas including but not limited to career and major exploration, academic advising, coaching, data analysis, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed. The omission of related duties does preclude the supervisor from assigning them.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and one (1) year of appropriate experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience working as an academic advising and/or other student service experience.
