About the Job
About the Job: The primary purpose of a maintenance painter at the University of Minnesota Duluth is to ensure the aesthetic and functional integrity of campus facilities through painting and coating applications. This includes addressing routine maintenance needs, executing surface preparation, and applying paints to enhance the longevity and appearance of buildings. Maintenance painters play a crucial role in preserving and protecting the university's physical infrastructure while contributing to a safe and visually appealing campus environment.
Location and Work environment: Duluth Campus, in-person.
Work Schedule: 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm
Primary Responsibilities: * Paint interior and exterior portions of buildings and other structures: pipes, screens, doors, metal door frames, walls, ceiling fixtures, floors, and walks. * Applies paints and finishes through a variety of methods: brushing, rolling, spraying, etc. * Paint enamel equipment such as trucks and other vehicles. * Mix and match paints and stains. * Decorate and stencil interior rooms and hang wallpaper, vinyl wall covering and borders. Wash walls and ceilings and remove wallpaper, sand and scrapes surfaces, and putties defects preparatory to hanging wallpaper and painting. * Tape, sand and prepare sheetrock for painting. * Finish/refinish furniture and office equipment, cabinets, counters, tables, and desks: sands, stains, fills, seals and varnishes. * Performs graining and glazing. * Erect scaffolds for painting interiors and exteriors of buildings. * Perform preventative maintenance work as directed. * Complete work in an accurate, timely manner. Keep Supervisor informed of potential problems and delays. * Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior to all customers, co-workers, and other members of the campus community. * Represent Facilities Management and the University in a positive way by maintaining a professional and neat appearance. * Know any follow safety procedures and policies in everyday work and use protective equipment as required.
Miscellaneous Duties: * Perform basic computer tasks. * Maintain required work/break hours in Kronos payroll system. * Participate in team meetings and decisions within the work unit. * Other work-related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands: * Lifting and Carrying: Moving and carrying heavy paint cans, ladders, and other equipment. * Climbing: Climbing ladders or scaffolding to reach elevated surfaces. * Heights: Use of scissor and boom lifts to perform work at various elevations. * Bending and Stooping: Performing tasks close to the ground or on lower surfaces. * Repetitive Motions: Engaging in repetitive motions while painting, such as brushing or rolling. * Standing for Prolonged Periods: Remaining on their feet for extended periods during painting projects.
Environmental Demands: * Standing for Prolonged Periods: Remaining on their feet for extended periods during painting projects. * Dust and Particles: Potential exposure to dust and airborne particles, especially during surface preparation. * Ventilation: Working in areas with proper ventilation to reduce inhalation of fumes. * Temperature Variations: Working in different temperatures, including both indoor and outdoor environments. * Noise Levels: Exposure to moderate to high levels of noise, especially when using power tools. * Weather Conditions: Working outdoors, commercial painters may be exposed to different weather conditions, such as rain, heat, or cold.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Required Qualifications: * Journeyman painter knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, and materials of painting and decorating trades. * Most situations resolved using standard procedures and established guidelines * Works under general supervision; progress and outcomes are frequently reviewed
Preferred Qualifications: * Vocational or technical training in Painting
