Job Description

The City of Renton has a fantastic opportunity for a responsible Maintenance Custodian to join our Public Works team. The position performs a variety of physical tasks that keep our City buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds looking their best. If you are detail-oriented, dependable, and take pride in keeping buildings, facilities, and surrounding grounds clean, safe, and in good working order, while performing custodial services, minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and facility setup, this position may be a good fit for you. The Custodial Maintenance position follows a Monday-Friday schedule, starting with 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. hours and transitioning later in the year to 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please review the information below for a detailed description of the essential and standard functions of this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, and windows; replace light bulbs and ballasts and clean fountain and spa areas; report major repair and maintenance needs and assist other maintenance and grounds personnel in making a variety of repairs as required.
  • Perform minor, routine maintenance in various building trades including HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and painting; perform general and touch-up painting.
  • Inspect and clean refrigeration and air conditioning units periodically; perform a variety of preventive maintenance duties including changing filters and belts and lubricating parts; perform work at heights.
  • Perform a variety of custodial duties for assigned facilities according to established schedules; sweep, scrub and mop floors; wash windows, counters and walls; empty and clean waste receptacles; assist in gym floor repairs and refinishing as assigned.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and materials; refill various restroom dispensers, including paper towels, soap and related items; clean and sanitize restrooms including toilets, urinals, sinks, walls, stall doors and countertops.
  • Assist Facility Technicians in the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities.
  • Blow and clear sidewalks and entryways; remove leaves and debris from park facility roofs, gutters and downspouts.
  • Remove dead rodents, spider infestations and human and animal waste from City facilities.
  • Adjust and arrange furniture, tables, chairs and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings as assigned.
  • Assure security of buildings and grounds during assigned shift; turn lights on and off; unlock and lock doors and gates; raise and lower flags.
  • Inspect doors, windows and assigned areas for vandalism, report safety, fire hazards and vandalism as appropriate.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and hand and power tools used in general maintenance and custodial work including plumbing tools, vacuums, scrubber, buffer, pallet jack, power steamer, boom lift, paint sprayer, nail gun, carpet extractor, blower, electrical testing equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.

Standard Functions:

  • Maintain inventory of supplies and materials at assigned facilities; request additional materials according to established procedures.
  • Communicate with supervisor, city employees, citizens, and others regarding custodial and general maintenance and setup instructions.
  • Maintain a variety of records related to preventive maintenance, supplies, mileage, work orders, vandalism and hazardous waste records.
  • Requisition custodial supplies and maintenance items according to established procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support critical city priorities during disasters or other emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
  • Two years of general building maintenance and custodial experience.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to:

  • Maintain assigned City buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure manner during an assigned shift.
  • Perform general maintenance and repair on City buildings, fixtures, facilities, adjacent grounds and related equipment.
  • Use common cleaning equipment, chemicals, and supplies safely and efficiently.
  • Estimate materials, supply needs, requisition parts, and supplies according to established guidelines.
  • Inspect facilities for maintenance and repair needs and fire, safety and health hazards.
  • Observe and report need for skilled maintenance and repair.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Knowledge of:

  • Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general maintenance and custodial work.
  • Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in general building maintenance work.
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings and facilities in good repair including basic electrical, plumbing and painting repair.
  • Cleaning materials, disinfectants, equipment and floor surfaces involved in custodial work.
  • Health and safety procedures, practices and work methods.
  • Requirements of maintaining City buildings, structures and adjacent grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Interpersonal skills using quality customer service, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following represent the physical demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
  • Work is performed moving throughout the facility and community.
  • Driving and fieldwork required.
  • Frequent communication with City employees and customers.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, occasionally up to 70 pounds.
  • Operate small machinery such as waxer, buffer, and vacuum.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Climb and work from ladders, climb stairs, good reflexes and eyesight, and bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and noise from equipment.
  • Evening work may be required.

Recruitment Process:
The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications. Applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account.

At a minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept. of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity. In addition, this position requires accessing areas that contain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS). For that reason, this position is also subject to a national fingerprint-based records check.
