About the Opportunity:

As a metallography lab technician, the candidate will participate in the critical examinations of precision machine products to ensure they meet the requirements of our customers and applicable aerospace standards. This will include but not limited to; EDM recast, abusive machining evaluations, hydrogen pick up and determination of alpha case. Using the information gained, the candidate will contribute needed input which will help drive process improvements across the manufacturing operations. The candidate will have the responsibility for maintaining product testing quality. Testing and reporting will be in accordance with the established inspection quality policies and objectives of the facility.

Location: Whitesboro, New York

Responsibilities:

  • May be asked to participate in continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen, LEAN, etc.
  • Interface with Engineering and Operations to ensure transfer of results are understood so that improvements can be implemented in a timely manner.
  • Support the Quality Engineers to ensure that products and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the customer and the quality management system.
  • Work with customer auditors to facilitate audits, close out audit findings by implementing proper corrective and preventative actions when applicable.
  • Prepare and submit customer approval documentation when needed.
  • Create and maintain associated company quality documentation, such as quality manuals, quality procedures, and reports as applicable.
  • Maintain and order supplies required in the Metallography laboratory.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work environment. (6S principles)
  • Perform all duties of metallography sample preparation (sectioning, grinding, polishing, etching) in accordance with customer requirements and internal procedures.
  • Utilize various acid mixtures and chemicals used for etching and sample preparation.
  • Conduct proficient detailed metallographic examinations on a variety of material microstructures using optical microscopy to ensure materials meet required specifications.
  • Help create training protocols for metallographic technicians while providing guidance that ensures efficient and accurate sample preparation and operation of laboratory equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in a quality/aerospace/manufacturing environment.
  • Must be able to perform work subject to ITAR/EAR regulations.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis without sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and understand aerospace standards and MSDA sheets.
  • Be comfortable with handling different chemicals while following established safety rules and procedures.
  • Proficient in writing reports using Microsoft standard office programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate across teams and with customers
  • Aerospace experience and familiarity with AS9100, AS13100, NADCAP standards.
  • Associate degree is related fields preferred.
  • Laboratory experience in sample preparations.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to have prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk while working on a computer.
  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand and walk
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.
  • Personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses and safety shoes) is required on the shop floor
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required to accommodate priorities, deadlines, and schedules.
