In addition, the successful candidate will assist in optimization and validation of the machine-learning assay in other worm phenotypes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

50% Strain maintenance & life history analysis
Maintain C. elegans strains, perform genetic crosses and characterize life history traits including but not limited to stress resistance and lifespan

20% Routine implementation and development of machine-learning based assays
Carry out compound screens for effects on heat stress resistance. Aid in the development and optimization of new machine-learning based assays.

10% Molecular biology
Use PCR for genotyping nematode strains and molecular cloning to generate genetic constructs for introduction into C. elegans

10% Record Keeping
Keep detailed records of all experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks, databases, spreadsheets and web -based applications

10% Other lab duties assigned by Lab Manager

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Experience in genetics, molecular biology, computational biology and or coding would be advantageous.

About the Department

Gill Laboratory:

The goal of the Gill Lab at the University of Minnesota is to understand the molecular mechanisms that underpin the basic biology of development and aging in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The lab employs various genetic and chemical interventions to study their impact on the aging process. We have also recently developed a 96-well microplate-based assay for screening compounds that uses a machine learning approach to assess survival. We are collaborating with other researchers to adapt this technique for high-throughput screening of compounds against other worm phenotypes.
