Position Summary

The Corps Ministry assistant will participate in the leadership and development of assigned ministries that are given oversight by the Corps. Ministries include but not limited to Youth program, Troops, Family Fun Fellowship, ARC clients outreach transport, Sunday Morning Responsibilities, Special events at the corps, providing oversight to local Bible Study and Discipleship Groups and new Corps ministries that will be developing.

Essential Functions



  • Corps Ministry Assistant for The Salvation Army is a position is a position of sacred trust - representing, nurturing, protecting and advancing the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army; and serving the needs of people in our community with dignity and respect. Conduct on and off the job must sustain a positive impact on The Salvation Army's religious goals, programs and public image.
  • As such, all employees are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities within the scope of duties they perform.
  • Organizes and prioritizes the various tasks of the San Fernando Valley office in order of their importance.
  • To Know, explain and exemplify the mission, purpose and values of The Salvation Army San Fernando Valley Corps.
  • To understand all dimensions of Salvation Army mission and purpose toward the outcome of awareness, cohesiveness and effective guest services.
  • To create a safe, engaging environment for Salvation Army associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners and vendors.
  • To provide active support of, and participation in all Salvation Army campaigns and initiatives.
  • To develop appropriate relationships and maintain appropriate relationship boundaries with other Salvation Army associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners and vendors.
  • To communicate in appropriate, professional, responsive and supportive manner.
  • Effective interpersonal and electronic communication is essential for mission and purpose.
  • Interpersonal communication for day-to-day operational needs is preferred
  • Direct, thoughtful communication for the resolution of questions or conflicts is expected.
  • Electronic communication- email, texts etc.- is official communication, and supports and confirms interpersonal communication.
  • Deference to and public support of groups decisions and each other's scope of expertise, position and responsibilities must be maintained.
  • To maintain appropriate confidentiality. Some agreements, ideas, processes, or other forms are revealed to certain individuals who are in positions of responsibility or are in possession of qualities or skills that make it necessary for them to know such confidential matters. Such information must be maintained in confidence.
  • To complete annual, advanced training to include, but not limited to: Protect the Mission, Sexual Harassment and others as determined.



To positively guide and guard all Salvation Army resources, people, program, property and finances toward the fulfillment of mission and purpose, and within the guidelines established by law, policy and procedure.

Youth Program:



  • Lead worship for each Tuesday and Friday night program
  • Assist Corps officer by coordinating special guest speakers and events
  • Assist Corps officer by coordinating house visits
  • Drive from and to the corps to pick up kids and families
  • Keep statistics relevant and updated
  • Lead and devotionals, or lessons for kids or teens as needed
  • Coordinate and lead lessons for the Singing Company kids
  • Assist in Seasonal Intake for kids attending camp, including dropping and picking them up at camp location.


Corps Family Fund Fellowship



  • Be the leader of the monthly Family Fun Fellowship Program.Coordinate programs, music, and activities on and off-site
  • Recruit families from Sunday worship services, and food bank program
  • Coordinate and schedule volunteers, soldiers, meals and clean up after program,
  • Recruit volunteers, connect families and individuals from food programs who are seeking a church home.
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated


CCM



  • Assist the Corps Officer with contacting nursing homes in the community to schedule and coordinate visits with CCM members, or Singing Company (Include Christmas Visitation)
  • Assist the Corps Officer with visitation for corps members and family who are ill or hospitalized
  • Coordinate Annual CCM Sunday enrolling new members and celebrating Long Service
  • Assist the Corps Officer with volunteers in making hygiene bags for CCM
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated


Troops program:



  • Be available to provide spiritual counseling for children and youth as needed
  • Be responsible to drive children each Tuesday, Friday evening and as needed
  • Be responsible for looking and coordinating teachers for each clas
  • Be responsible for setting up each class with materials, field trips, monthly birthday celebrations
  • Promote programs to parents and families attending the Corps and food banks
  • Help with weekly devotion or lesson to children, tailoring scriptures lessons to make it easy to understand, following official Salvation Army programs.
  • Help and set snacks for kids and teens groups
  • Assist in reinforcing all PTM and child safety rules
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated


Christmas



  • Secure sites within the assigned area by contacting store manager, deciding where it is necessary to provide Certificate of Insurance, agreements and contracts.
  • Review the current inventory of Kettles equipment and make repairs or replacements as necessary.
  • Coordinate with HR coordinator to recruit kettle workers and ensure that proper documentation is completed and submitted to divisional headquarters for approval.
  • Work with the Corps Officer on the counting, reporting and banking of money raised through the program
  • Take kettle deposit to the bank daily
  • Contact and schedule bell ringers at available sites throughout the kettle season
  • Collect all kettles every day. Sign time sheets of bell ringers to verify hours worked
  • Ensure each bell ringer receives paycheck on time
  • Enter daily income and hours of workers into the Kettle system daily
  • At the end of the season make sure that all kettle equipment is secured in storage and send thank you letters to those who have allowed the Army to place kettles at their location
  • Prepare a brief that outlines every detail of program for future use and reviewAssist with setting up Christmas trees and Angel Tags at participating location including collecting bin.
  • Collects toys as needed from participating locations
  • Assist with Client Intake for seasonal assistance and distribution of Angel tree gifts
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated


Special Events Logistics Coordinator for Corps Outreach Events



  • Assist with planning special events, including set up, advertising, operations and clean up.
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated


Sunday Morning Responsibilities



  • Keep up to date records of groups and facilitate resources as needed
  • Contact and connect with visitors and new members at the Corps. Connecting them to a local Bible Study group leader and Corps Officer.
  • Wear Salvation Army Uniform each week Assist in music duties- play/ sing and support Praise & Worship band
  • Gives singing Lesson to Singing Company kids group Helps lead Sunday school, in conjunction with local corps volunteers
  • Maintain Statistics relevant and updated of all groups including Holiness Service


Administrative



  • Create flyers to promote programs accordingly
  • Maintain social media up to date and relevant following guidelines and directions of Corps Officers
  • Maintain and organize volunteers' files following PTM guidelines
  • Create power points for programs, included but not limited to Sunday service, youth, ccm, and others as needed.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • High school diploma required
  • Minimum of five years of ministry experience
  • Valid California drivers license, auto insurance and personal transportation
  • Attention to detail, quality and professionalism
  • Excellent communication skills, including both oral and writte
  • Ability to work flexible schedule, including weekend and evenings.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Driving test and pass MVR check
  • A criminal background check is required with certification of Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must have ability to work with direct, and relate well with co-workers, community members and guests / clients.
  • Able to function in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
  • Must possess good relationship skills
  • Work a nonstandard work week generally in accordance with The Salvation Army programs, Sundays, evenings, camp schedules, Divisional weekend events and special Saturday events
