Job Summary

The Athletics Media Relations & Communications Coordinator assists in the operations of the Athletics Communications Department. The position serves as the media contact for assigned sports and works to build positive relationships with the public, the press, and electronic media. This role assists in maintaining the Athletics Department website, assists in implementing department social media strategy, writes media releases, game notes, stories for publication and other communications. This role coordinates and administers multiple media marketing and communications programs consistent with marketing and communications initiatives.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a media liaison to ASUN Conference, NCAA, and visiting athletics staff.
  • Acts as a liaison to the ASUN Conference, NCAA, and visiting athletics communications staffs.
  • Writes and edits press releases, game notes, feature stories, web content, and other official athletics communications.
  • Maintains and updates the Athletics Department website, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency of content.
  • Manages sport-specific social media accounts in alignment with departmental communications strategy.
  • Identifies, develops, and pitches story ideas to internal and external media outlets to promote FGCU Athletics.
  • Prepares network television and broadcast crews for home event telecasts.
  • Coordinates media operations for home athletic contests, including press box staffing, credentialing, statisticians, and table crew.
  • Maintains accurate team and individual statistics in collaboration with the Director of Athletics Communications; ensures historical records are complete and accurate.
  • Monitors communications production workflows to ensure deadlines and standards are met.
  • Assists the Director of Athletics Communications with budget planning and oversight, including the supervision and training of student workers and interns.
  • Assists with oversight and organization of photo archives and historical athletics records.
  • Assists in establishing and implementing departmental policies and procedures related to athletics communications.
  • Complies with all University and ASUN Conference as well as all NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Remains current with all changes in NCAA, as well as changes to University and ASUN Conference rules and regulations regarding intercollegiate athletics. This includes the requirement for self-reporting any possible rule violations and participation in the annual NCAA continuing education programs including passing the NCAA certification test, if applicable. Any violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either five years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and one year of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional full-time experience in marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Knowledge of and ability to use AP style.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with audio or multi-media production, communications or marketing project management, graphic design, writing, photography, print layout and design, print production, or social media design.
  • Experience working in higher education athletics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of marketing principles, including promotion, fundraising, and public relations.
  • Knowledge of NCAA and ASUN Conference rules and regulations as they pertain to the job duties.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.

  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.
