Primary Function of Organizational Unit North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Johnston County, located along the transition zone between the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain is home to a rapidly growing population. The current population is in excess of 250,000 people and is growing daily. While there is rapid population growth, there are still many rural communities in the county and the largest municipality, Clayton, has just over 30,000 residents. The county enjoys an excellent quality of life with recreation, shopping, dining, schools, and easy access to the NC Coast and the city of Raleigh, NC.

Duties and Responsibilities The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in Family and Consumer Sciences (
FCS), including the areas of foods, nutrition, health and wellness for Johnston County.
The agent will collaborate and network with other agencies, groups, and organizations with similar missions. The professional in this position must be self-motivated, energetic, enjoy working with individuals as well as groups, be able to work with broad audiences, and have the ability to manage multiple tasks with little supervision. The successful candidate is expected to be a team player collaborating with the Johnston Extension staff and other organizations on multidisciplinary programs. The agent will possess a high degree of subject matter competence and be eager to learn more as new trends and issues emerge. The successful candidate will have good communication and organization skills, be able to work independently, and be flexible to the demands of the public.
There is interest in food safety information from home audiences and to a lesser extent from the restaurant trade. The ability of clients to obtain training in an approved food safety certification program is expected. The pursuit of outside resources such as grants and donations may be beneficial to support program expansion.
Experience preparing and presenting educational resource materials for face-to-face settings or via other forms of writing, and internet, including social media, is vital. |
| Other Work/Responsibilities |
Other duties and responsibilities:
-Reporting on program impacts, including gathering data and preparing reports for stakeholders.
-Attending trainings and engaging in professional development opportunities.
-Conduct collaborative programs with County Extension staff and other County departments.
Candidates should have excellent time and resource management skills, should be personable, and able to build networking coalitions. Food safety certification (ServSafe or Safe Plates) is also highly desirable.
Experience is strongly preferred specifically with value added agricultural products, development and facilitation of commercial kitchens, food truck certification programs, and local foods coordination. The successful candidate must be able to navigate the boundaries of organic, local, and commercial ag products without alienation of groups or producers. The successful individual must be willing to follow research-based information without introduction of their own personal bias.
While food preservation experience is not required, there is an active component of the program that will require offering educational opportunities in this area. Training will be available to the successful candidate. The successful candidate must be able and willing to work with school age children and adults and demonstrate an ability to work with individuals from many different backgrounds.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent is expected to support youth education efforts in collaboration with 4-H Youth Development by delivering age-appropriate programming in areas such as nutrition, life skills, and health education through schools, camps, and community settings. The agent must demonstrate professionalism when interacting with youth and families. |

One of the following educational requirements: - A Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum
GPA requirement will be waived for
NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. - A Bachelor's degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master's degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or - Completion of a Master's degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field. |
