What to Expect

The Engineering team's mission is to improve customer experience of Tesla products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with a large cross-section of other engineering teams. This is a hands-on individual contributor role centered on failure analysis and root cause activities.

We are seeking a multi-faceted Electrical or Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of all aspects of identifying, analyzing, root causing, implementing countermeasures, and reporting on issues affecting infotainment, low voltage, ADAS, Chassis systems and power electronics components. The Quality Field Engineer ensures product quality directly at customer sites, production lines, or supplier locations, acting as the crucial link between engineering, manufacturing, and the end-user. This role involves solving technical issues, analyzing failures, and implementing lasting quality improvements through hands-on support, data analysis, and coordinating corrective actions like recalls. The engineer bridges the gap between design specifications and real-world performance, with a strong emphasis on customer satisfaction and preventing future product flaws.

The Field Quality Engineer will need familiarity with the detailed behavior of these electro-mechanical assemblies and the tools and equipment used in manufacturing. You will work with other Engineering teams to quickly mitigate and implement countermeasures for field issues, improving the quality, reliability, and durability of Tesla products.

This role supports diagnostic and repair strategies, champions product feedback from the field, and enables scalable quality solutions across all Tesla vehicle systems. It requires driving field issue detection, structured root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation to ensure every customer experience informs our continuous product improvement journey. The position demands travel within your region, including driving Tesla vehicles for testing or delivery/service, operating heavy equipment, and potentially operating commercial vehicles requiring a CDL or duties triggering Department of Transportation compliance.

What You'll Do
  • Monitor and analyze field performance of Tesla vehicle systems (e.g., HV systems, drive units, batteries, power electronics) to identify, prioritize, and investigate issues based on severity, frequency, and cost
  • Perform failure analysis (board-level, component, system) using engineering and manufacturing expertise; conduct root cause analysis (5-Whys, Fishbone, Fault Tree) and implement corrective actions, diagnostics, and repairs
  • Collaborate with engineering, service, diagnostics, and quality teams to communicate insights, refine procedures, and drive scalable solutions; support documentation, remote tools, and design reviews (DFMEAs, PFMEAs)
  • Lead continuous improvements, preventive actions, and process optimizations; participate in NPI, DOE, statistical analysis, audits, training, and incident response
  • Provide field/manufacturing support, including hands-on work, supervision, mentoring, and validation of fixes; embrace safety, collaboration, and may require operating vehicles (CDL/DOT compliance)

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Software, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on failure analysis experience (consumer electronics, semiconductors, EVs, automotive preferred); entry-level with co-ops/internships (e.g., Formula SAE) considered
  • Proficiency in software/firmware tools, logs, PCBA/electromechanical troubleshooting, and manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of failure analysis tools, statistical software (Python, Minitab, JMP), quality standards (ASME, ISO 9001), DOE, and inspections
  • Data management and interpretation using business systems
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration
  • Proactive, ownership-driven mindset focused on quality, safety, integrity, and adaptability
  • Willingness to travel regionally, drive/test Tesla vehicles, and work hands-on in service/production/supplier sites
  • Comfort with physical tasks, heavy equipment operation (may need CDL/DOT), and dynamic environments
