This type of appointment is not approved to work more than 999 hours per year for all positions combined. Should incumbents work more than a total of 999 hours in a year the appointment may not continue beyond one year of service.
Physical Education Instructors are essential for providing a robust curriculum of wellness courses to meet the graduation requirement for all students. Instructors are needed to teach a variety of topics which may be discussion based or activity based topics. We are currently seeking instructors to facilitate 10 hour courses in the following areas: Spiritual Wellness, Nutrition, Mental and Emotional Wellness, Life skills and Fitness, Life hobbies such as in Golf, Horseback riding, Trap Shooting, Boxing, Racquetball or Tennis. Fitness instructors are needed to Teach 50 minute courses weekly during the semester, including for Focus on Fitness during the lunch hours for employees, many course subjects will require certifications to ensure the health and safety of participants.
Instructors will be required to provide a course description and syllabus as well as maintain and submit course attendance records in a timely manner.
Physical Education courses are offered each semester and student registration is held before each new unit. Course dates for the fall semester typically are the first week in September through the first week of October for Session I, and Session II is typically, mid-October through mid-November. For the spring semester Session I starts in late January and runs through early March, with Session II running late March through the end of April.
Fitness and Focus on Fitness courses are offered from early September through early December and early January through early May.

Supervisor:
Work under the supervision of the Director of Recreation, Chair of Physical Education or the Assistant Director of Recreational Programs.
Accountabilities
Colgate University's Physical Education and Recreation Department is hiring a part-time instructor for the Fall 2026 semester. We are looking for a reliable person to lead classes for our students and campus community while following department and university standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Adhere to and enforce all University and recreational facility policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Follow all staff procedures established by the University and the Colgate Physical Education and Recreation Department.
  • Verify that all patrons and students possess the proper credentials to use the facility.
  • Maintain accurate class attendance records using department-provided forms to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
  • Manage course makeup options in accordance with department guidelines or approved instructor-led alternatives.
  • Coordinate excused absences through the PE Office, ensuring medical excuses are verified by the Deans or the Health Center.
  • Arrive early for class setup and ensure sessions conclude promptly (typically at the 50-minute mark) to respect subsequent facility bookings.
  • Conduct classes with professionalism and courtesy while ensuring participants clean and return all equipment.
  • Manage low-enrollment cancellations by the second class meeting, including student notification and coordination with the PE Office.
  • Respond to injuries by utilizing the Huntington Cage for basic first aid or contacting Campus Safety for emergencies; submit required injury reports to the PE Office immediately.
  • Collect and submit signed waivers for any Faculty or Staff participants joined on a space-available basis.
  • Submit bi-weekly hours via the Colgate Portal Payroll app, ensuring total hours do not exceed 40 per week for hourly employees.
  • Coordinate with supervisors regarding any schedule adjustments or eligibility for additional payment based on regular job duties.

Requirements




Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in the specific area or course being taught.
  • Professional certification required for specialized fitness instruction.
  • Proficiency with Google Drive and the ability to use an iPad for instructional tasks.

  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification preferred, or a willingness to obtain it within the first six months.
  • All Colgate PE instructors must be CPR \ AED certified. PERA will provide a 1 - 2 hour certification class.
  • Knowledge of campus AED locations, specifically those in Huntington Gym located outside the Fitness Center, Pool, and Varsity Weight Room.
