Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The University College offers a comprehensive array of academic support services geared towards facilitating the smooth transition of first- and second-year students into the university environment. Through Academic Advising, Academic Success Coaching, Tutoring, Supplemental Learning, and a host of other resources, we aim to empower students to navigate their academic journey successfully. Our primary objective is to guide students towards timely graduation within four years while also nurturing their holistic development throughout their college experience.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Academic Advisor provides academic advisement to NCCU's University College constituents (first-year students, sophomores, and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, and presentations on majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and course selection for future semesters. This position assesses individual student situations and circumstances to create, implement, and monitor students' academic progress, retention, and holistic development, with support from internal/external organizations and resources that meet student needs.
The position supports the mission and vision of University College through cross collaboration with campus constituents, service on various committees, including orientation programs and campus events.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula.
Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum requirements include Bachelors' degree. Master's degree in education, counseling, or similar related field, and three (3) to five (5) years' experience in higher education to include excellent advising preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Conduct one-on-one and small group advising sessions with University College students (first year students, sophomores and transfer students) to discuss majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and course selection for future semesters. Provide personalized guidance and support to help students navigate their academic journey effectively. Review student progression in coursework to ensure that students advance adequately in their curriculum plan and make necessary schedule adjustments and recommendations. Assist students in accessing and utilizing support services, including tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic success workshops. Provide intervention for students identified as high risk based on early alert mechanism including early warning and mid-term grade reporting.

Utilize advising technology tools to streamline advising processes, maintain student records, and enhance communication with students. Implement strategies to monitor and support students' academic progression, retention, and overall holistic development throughout the semester using proactive retention strategies.

Participate in programming with newly admitted and continuing students related to academic planning and student persistence. Assist the Associate Dean in developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students and implementing general advising best practices. Occasional after-hours availability may be necessary to support students or attend advising-related events.


Function Administrative

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to facilitate seamless transitions for students and enhance the overall student experience. Serve on University College committees that support student success and retention as assigned by the Associate Dean or Advising Coordinator. Stay current on curricular updates and procedural changes issued by academic departments and student support offices to ensure accurate advising and to provide students with timely and informed guidance.
