Job Summary

The Lead Communications Specialist is responsible for various communication needs of the organization, including fundraising, donor engagement, events, and general marketing and communications support. Manages and executes a cohesive and integrated communication strategy, in collaboration with key stakeholders and in partnership with the Foundation's Director of Marketing and Communications.

The Lead Specialist oversees the editorial process, from concept to publication, for all Foundation collateral materials. Serves as a line editor and copy editor for all written content and will build and manage communication plans that support philanthropic outreach to donors and stakeholders.

The Lead Specialist routinely collaborates with cross-functional teams to gather information and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Denver Health and Hospital Authority's priorities and initiatives and stay informed about industry trends and competitors to enhance communication strategies and inform work, implementing best practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Content Planning and Communications Strategy
    * Design and execute integrated communication strategies in partnership with the Director of Marketing and Communications.
    * Manage the Denver Health Foundation editorial calendar, ensuring that communications strategies align with content creation and delivery schedules
    * Contribute to and manage the creation of compelling content across multiple channels, including donor reports, philanthropic impact reports, donor stewardship videos, digital content, press releases, and internal communications.
    * Serve as the Foundation's final proofreader for all collateral materials.
    * Ensure that brand voice and style guidelines are consistently adhered to across all communication materials.

  • Project Management
    * Develop editorial and communication project timelines, assign tasks, and oversee the on-time and on-budget delivery of high-quality, error-free content, communication, and collateral materials.
    * Coordinate with the Denver Health Marketing team to develop media relations opportunities that leverage donor and grateful patient stories in support of Denver Health Foundation.
    * Design and implement frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of programs.
    * Conduct regular content audits and implement improvements based on feedback and analytics.
    * Research, identify and onboard new communications technologies to support the donor experience

  • Team Guidance and Consultant Management
    * Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to internal Foundation staff on best practices for communications.
    * At the direction of the Director of Marketing and Communications, advise other Denver Health and Hospital Authority departments on Foundation communications strategies and content development.
    * Manage relationships with external communications consultants and vendors, including defining the scope and providing oversight.
    * Conduct regular reviews of external consultant deliverables and provide feedback when necessary.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, New Media, Marketing, Communications or Public Relations, or related field required.

Work Experience:

  • 7-9 years experience in editing, writing, marketing or related field required.
  • 4-6 years project management and communications planning experience. required.
  • Health care, journalism or foundation experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to tell a story effectively through a range of media engagements (interviews, op-eds, backgrounding, speeches, etc.).
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Understanding the perspectives of key stakeholders, from institutional investors to the beneficiaries of our work.
  • Strong understanding of marketing technologies and adaptability to changes in technology.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and train and mentor communications associates.
  • Excellent organizational abilities.
  • Passion for the mission of Denver Health; understanding of the basic principles of social justice and asset-based community development.
  • Self-starter who works well under general supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with audiences diverse in age, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, etc.
  • Knowledge of website management, including WordPress, and website analytics measurement methodology and measurement platforms, including Google Analytics.
  • Design software knowledge including Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong understanding of marketing technologies and adaptability to changes in technology.
  • Knowledge of website analytics measurement methodology and measurement platforms including Google Analytics.
  • Familiarity with the email marketing programs such as Constant Contact or MailChimp are required.
  • Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
