Overview

There's never been a better time to join the shipbuilding industry. As demand for cutting-edge naval technology grows, General Dynamics Electric Boat is at the forefront-designing, building, and maintaining the most advanced submarines in the world. Our work is mission-critical, supporting the U.S. Navy and strengthening national security.

About Department 416 - COLUMBIA Class Fluid Systems Engineering

Department 416 is responsible for submarine fluid systems including auxiliary and life support, habitability, seawater and drainage systems. These systems are essential in sustaining life underwater, performing submarine operations, and accomplishment of the ship's mission.

Role Overview:

Fluid systems engineers are involved from concept development to ship delivery, including execution of projects that support COLUMBIA Class design efforts, system improvements, and design changes. This role requires continued growth in technical and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities include:

    Development of requirements and specifications.
  • Perform calculations (e.g. pressure drop, flow analyses, heat loads, stress analysis).
  • Create and improve fluid system designs.
  • Develop/review system diagrams and drawings.
  • Select material and equipment.
  • Resolve emergent design and construction issues.
  • Manage system interfaces.
  • Developing system operating instructions, test forms, and maintenance procedures for ship's crew.

Project Management Responsibilities include:

  • Develop budgets and schedules to support program milestones.
  • Manage requirements and interface with engineers and management from other disciplines.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers (e.g. other EB departments, NAVSEA, Ship's Force, etc.).

In addition to fluid system work, engineers in D416 are exposed to broader aspects of submarine design, construction, and operation - providing opportunities for continuous growth, leadership, and career progression. This may include rotation experiences supporting other departments to support business needs.

Some travel may be necessary.
