Job Summary

All Pharmacy Technicians are accountable to the outpatient manager or operating pharmacist who is legally responsible by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by Pharmaceutical Services. Performs all activities related to traditional pharmacy prescription dispensing and medication distribution. They may also participate in the computer entries of medications and prescriptions, including entries of specialty medications in the patient profile as directed by a Pharmacist.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965. Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

Required Qualifications


  • Completion of a recognized/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (includes hands-on training period during externship), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals or health care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Pharmacy Technician Certification CPhT
  • Preferred candidates with at least two years of I.V. Additives experience
  • Knowledge of USP 797/800 standards, hazardous and aseptic IV techniques for sterile compounding
  • Knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint software programs, Pyxis machine, and Primary Engineering Control (PEC)

License/Certification

Active Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing
